“Quarrel of Ancients and Moderns” in the Light of Philosophical Anthropology

Bondarev А.P.

Abstract

“The quarrel of ancients and moderns” which flared up at the turn of the 17th -18th centuries between the French “archaists and innovators”, is seen as a reaction of the intellectuals of the era of Louis XIV to their realization of the fact of the “foundless” of the man of the New Age. The search for ways to overcome “suspension” (Deleuze) divided the debaters into admirers of Antiquity and apologists for progress. The accumulation of pro et contra arguments spontaneously involved them in the ongoing discussion on the “problem of man” (Buber), which is the province of philosophical anthropology.
