Russia Through the Eyes of a Foreigner: Emotive Means of Creating the Image of a Country

Abstract

The paper based on the notes of German-speaking travelers is dedicated to the emotive means of the language, objectifying the emotional reactions of the authors of publications to the events and facts of Russian reality. The analysis revealed language means representing the most frequent emotional reactions (surprise and apprehension); the spheres of their actualization (nature, welfare, lifestyle and behavior of Russians in everyday life). It has been established that the image of a country has a field structure.

On the Changes of the Lexical System of the German Language (Corpus Data Capabilities)

Abstract

The article discusses the current changes in the German lexical system on the basis of the analysis of German lexicographic and corpus sources; it also reveals the reasons for these changes. The material of the research is composed of the media discourse lexical units taken from the book Heutige deutsche Sprache - ein Zeichen für ihren Verfall? by the lawyer Ludwig During. The author of the edition views these lexical units as a violation of the German language norm, though a limited number of cases was confirmed in the lexicographic sources.

Verbalization of Mimic and Gestures on the Material of Corpus Data

Abstract

The article deals with the ways of linguistic representation of somatisms head, eyes, eyebrows. Using examples from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), the most frequent kinesic utterances are analyzed and the main communicative situations and emotional states in which they are realized are identified. It is assumed that the selected somatisms to a certain extent reflect the non-verbal behavior of representatives of the given ethnic culture. The paper indicates the relevance of this topic and its further in-depth study using a comparative method.

The research is made according to main ideas of cognitive linguistics and is devoted to the analysis of the functioning of the German anthroponym Patriarch in cross-domain comparison in the media. Abstract

The research under consideration focuses on acute problems of legal consciousness of a Russian lawyer. The authors undertake to compare and analyze legal mindsets of lawyers who have studied a legal language and the appropriate legal system, and their counterparts who are unfamiliar with the foreign legal experience. The authors come to the conclusion that the analysis of foreign legal experience within foreign legal discourse substantially influences the formation of legal consciousness of a Russian lawyer.

Abstract

The paper attempts to look at the actualization of metonymic models in the semantics of euphemisms in a number of nominative spheres in the Chinese language in the comparative aspect. The results of the research revealed that metonymic models can function both as an independent conceptual basis of the semantics of euphemistic units as well as a basis for further metonymic or metaphoric complication of an original concept accompanied by a change in the euphemistic potential of a unit.

The subject of this article is the features of the conceptual structure of the modern German detective novel addressed to children and adolescents. The conceptual, contextual-semantic and interpretive methods of analyzing the conceptual structure of detective genre works within the framework of children’s and youth literature allow us to conclude that two structures coexist in the texts - the basic conceptual structure of the children’s and youth novel and the genre-forming conceptual structure of the detective story.

Institutionalization of the Discourse on the French Language in French Media (based on the National Daily Le Figaro)

Abstract

Since the 17th century, the French Academy has been the main institution regulating standards of the French language. However, over the past few decades, the conservative position of the Academy came into conflict with the need to reflect the social and economic changes in France. As a result, the French press is positioning itself as a social institution involved in regulating the linguistic norm of the French language. The article proposes to examine the institutionalization of media discourse on the French language on the example of the national daily newspaper Le Figaro, which created a separate column devoted to the French language.

Constructions with the Verb “Andare” in Italian. Paraphrase, Pseudo-Coordination or Serializations?

Abstract

The article proposes an analysis of Italian verbal structures using the verb andare in order to classify them into one of the following categories: verbal paraphrases, pseudo-coordination or serial verbal constructions. After explaining the principles by which various constructions were researched and analyzed, we came to the conclusion that Italian verb constructions using the verb andare can be identified as verbal paraphrases or special cases of paratactic constructions.

Based on the material of French literature from the Middle Ages to postmodernism, the article traces the stages of the plot-forming interaction of the author’s creative intention, the semantic autonomy of the plot and the reader’s participatory reception. Attention is focused on episodes that testify to the exhaustion of the traditional discourse’s ability to verbalize the ever more complex picture of the world. The principle of mimesis addresses to literature the requirements of variatization of narrative forms that are adequate to the logical structure of the events depicted.
