Abstract

Based on the material of French literature from the Middle Ages to postmodernism, the article traces the stages of the plot-forming interaction of the author’s creative intention, the semantic autonomy of the plot and the reader’s participatory reception. Attention is focused on episodes that testify to the exhaustion of the traditional discourse’s ability to verbalize the ever more complex picture of the world. The principle of mimesis addresses to literature the requirements of variatization of narrative forms that are adequate to the logical structure of the events depicted.
