Floral symbolism in Gibran Khalil Gibran’s novella “The Broken Wings”

Gadzhimuradova T.E., Magomedova A.O.

Abstract

the article explores the symbolism of flowers in the novella “The Broken Wings” by Gibran Khalil Gibran, a representative of the Syro-American literary school. The work belongs to the early period of the writer’s creativity and contains autobiographical elements reflecting his time in his homeland. The novella depicts the problems of Lebanon “stuck in the Middle Ages,” including vestiges of the past, social injustice, the arbitrariness of the rich, the hypocrisy of the clergy, and the impoverished existence of the people. Through symbolism, the essence of these social contradictions and the complex nature of social upheavals are revealed. The writer’s inclination toward multi-layered imagery, stemming from his affinity with neo-Sufism, is emphasized. Special attention is given to the symbolism of the lily, which demonstrates multiple interpretations. The transformation of other floral images in the novella is also of interest. Flowers reveal the inner emotional state of the characters, particularly when they are presented in contrasting comparison. The symbolic level embodies the idea of the characters’ maturation, their struggle, and liberation from cruel social laws. Floral imagery is active only in relation to young people in love. The older generation, characterized by nobility of thought and action, is represented through the symbolism of the tree “laden with autumn fruits,” symbolizing experience, wisdom, and knowledge of life.

The specifics of literary and cultural transfer of Virginia Woolf's essay "A Room of One's Own"

Gasparyan L.A.

Abstract

the purpose of the study is to present the specifics of literary and cultural transfer on the material of Virginia Woolf's essay "A Room of One's Own" in Russian and Armenian translations. In this vein, the mechanism of cultural transfer proposed by comparativist M. Espagne focuses on the transfer of microstructural segments of the literary text, revealing various translation shifts and fractions. Through the lens of analyzed examples, the strategies of "importing" concepts, translation shifts are presented. Moreover, the study reveals the readiness of the target literary culture to perceive / not perceive and adapt ideas and artifacts. The results of the microanalysis allow us to conclude that the process of transferring a literary text depends on various aspects: a comprehensive synthesis of the context, (trans)creativity and the intention of the translators. An important factor is the regional platform of the target culture (British-Russian/Armenian), worldview and literary trends. In general, the occasionally constructed segments in Woolf’s essay are very sensitive to similar structural-semantic transfer, which may cause certain difficulty and affect the target reader reception.

Cognitive modeling of the meaning of the verb ‘advise’

Guseykhanova Z.S., Kokova M.M.

Abstract

the article studies into the mechanisms of activation of the frame ‘advice’ based on the example of the propositional verb ‘advise’. A description of the structural-semantic and syntagmatic properties of this verb is given in order to analyze the ADVICE frame represented with its help, and its obligatory and optional components are highlighted. The authors come to the conclusion that, schematically, all models of the use of the verb advise can be reduced to the structural-semantic scheme S – P – O1 – O2, (subject – predicate – indirect object – direct object). The different ways of presenting this scheme are determined by the different ways of presenting the obligatory components of the ADVICE frame – subject, predicate, beneficiary object, objective. These components are the top levels of the ADVICE frame, they are always defined and true in relation to the situation being described. Even if these components are not included in the explication of the statement, they are necessarily included in its semantic interpretation. At the same time, the non-obligatory elements of the ADVICE frame, presented at its subordinate level, include the following components: possibility, compulsion, volition, emotional state, method, confidence, authority, intention, and solicitation. These are private data, known on the basis of a given situation and explicating the conditions of the action, expressed by the verb advise.

Evolution of understanding symbol in Chinese literature

Krasheninnikov A.E., Narbut E.V., Shchepteva V.E.

Abstract

this paper explores the evolutionary trajectory of the understanding of symbol in Chinese literature and culture in general, tracing how symbol has transformed from a means of Confucian edification (e.g., I Yijin) and moral allegory into an instrument for expressing philosophical depth, personal reflection, and complex human psychology. It traces the transition from traditional, generally accepted symbolic meanings to more subjective and individualized forms of expression, driven by the desire of literary figures for self-expression. It can be said that the changing understanding of symbol reflected the changing cultural and intellectual landscape of China. The paper examines key stages in the development of Chinese symbolism, analyzing examples from different eras and genres, from the creation of the Book of Songs (Shijing) to the end of the 20th century, the moment of the emergence and development of modern Chinese poetry (???), in particular, misty poetry. Over time, the understanding of “symbol” in Chinese literature has undergone changes. The concept has adapted to new realities without losing its specificity. Despite the tendency towards subjectivism, the 20th century symbolists used not only their original symbols, which can be interpreted by analyzing their artistic systems, but also specifically Chinese ones, as well as universal ones for all cultures.

History of Crimean Tatar poetry of the 15th-18th centuries in historical prose of the Crimean Khanate period

Sagandzhiev E.R.

Abstract

among the most significant monuments of historical prose by Crimean Tatar authors from the period of the Crimean Khanate are “The History of Khan Sahib Geray” by Kaysuni-zade Nidai (16th century), “The History of Khan Islam Geray” by Mehmed Senai (17th century), “Support of News” by Abdulgaffar K?r?mi, and “Seven Planets in the Accounts of the Tatar Rulers” by Seyyid Muhammad Riza (18th century). These works represent key examples of Crimean Tatar prose of the era and are of great scholarly value for the study of the historical and cultural context of the region. They provide detailed insights into the lives of the khans, the daily life of the Crimean Tatars, geopolitical relations with neighboring states, and the role of literature during the Crimean Khanate. Moreover, they include fragments of personal correspondence of the ruling elite, as well as descriptions of battles in which either the authors themselves or the figures to whom their works are dedicated participated. In addition to their historical significance, these texts are important sources for the study of medieval Crimean Tatar poetry. They offer highly valuable, often unique information about a number of Crimean poets from the 15th to the 18th centuries, along with an anthology of examples of their poetic works.

Word-formation transparency and morphemic richness as parameters of vocabulary complexity in Russian as a foreign language tasks (Chinese sample)

Bai Z.

Abstract

the article examines the influence of word-formation transparency and morphemic density on the complexity of vocabulary in Russian as a foreign language tasks using a Chinese sample. The material was tasks of levels A2-B2 from educational courses and tests; for each unit, the following indicators were calculated: degree of transparency (on a 0-2 scale), morphemic density (number of morphemes per token), derivational depth, frequency, and length. Expert annotation, regression modeling, and error analysis were used. The results show that a decrease in transparency and an increase in morphemic density statistically increase the probability of an incorrect answer and increase the completion time; abstract suffixes -ost', -enie (-ness), and prefixal patterns with polysemy (za-, po-, pere-) are particularly difficult for Chinese students. In contrast, complex words with motivating supports ("samo-", "vodo-") and transparent word-formation nests facilitate acquisition. A complexity prediction scale and methodological solutions are proposed: preliminary formation of morpheme families, visualization of word structure, and adaptive dosing of affixes. The findings are useful for constructing digital and traditional assignments in Russian as a foreign language, as well as for setting up automatic assessment of the lexical difficulty of materials. Indicators for adaptive learning systems in courses are proposed.

The diary narrative in Tawfiq al-Hakim’s novella “Diary of a Country Prosecutor”

Gadzhimuradova T.E., Murtazalieva B.M.

Abstract

the article analyzes the composition of the novella by the Egyptian writer Tawfiq al-Hakim “Diary of a Country Prosecutor”. Arab critics associate al-Hakim with the era of “National Renaissance,” whose representatives felt the need to seek new forms distinguished by national content. In the novella, the plot begins with the announcement of a murder that the investigator, the narrator of the diary, undertakes to solve in chronological order. The investigation of one crime becomes a pretext to portray peasants and their harsh lives or to discuss the author’s colleagues – judges, officials, investigators, etc. The article focuses on the diary within the historical and cultural context of the novella. The chronologicity, datability, dialogicity, and evaluative features of the diary narrative are highlighted. The article also observes the structure of the events, retrospection, and portrait descriptions. The composition uses parallel structures (the investigator’s relationships with his assistant, prosecutor, and district head, among others). The diary becomes a chronicle of truthful yet tragic depictions of Egyptian society, which suppresses individuality and generates numerous human tragedies. The assessment of public life events is marked by impartiality and objectivity.

Word-formation and semantic analysis of the occasional Russian language with the prefix without-

Guseynova M.B., Mallaeva S.D.

Abstract

the paper discusses issues related to new words of the Russian language, which were formed using the prefix without-. The basis for the formation of such words is a noun combination. Such adjectives do not have correlative formations without this affix. These adjectives are related to any branch of science, technology, or production, and they all have the meaning of the absence of any subject. The semantics of some words, in particular those in question, were prepared by words and phrases that were correlative in meaning. The prefix under study is ancient and actively functioning in oral speech, artistic and journalistic speech. Observations on adjectives with the prefix without- lead to the conclusion that this prefix has specialized its word-formation resources at the present stage of language development. A significant number of them relate to professional terminology. Of all the meanings of the prefix, the meaning of "absence, deprivation" turns out to be dominant, the value of the opposite is less active.

Rhizoma and intertextuality in Chigozie Obioma's the Fishermen (in English)

Bobrovskaya N.A., Ezerikh A.S., Manukhina I.A., Khrebtova T.S.

Abstract

this article provides an in-depth analysis of the structural features of Chigozie Obioma's novel The Fishermen, focusing on the postmodern narrative architecture through the concepts of rhizome and intertextuality. The study aims to identify how the author utilizes the principles of multiplicity, nonlinearity, and acentricity to construct a Nigerian postcolonial narrative. The objectives include: 1) analyzing the novel's intertextual connections with African mythology, biblical motifs, and classical antiquity; 2) exploring the rhizomatic organization of the text – how narrative points develop and interact; 3) determining how the novel's structural elements reflect the socio-historical and cultural context of post-independence Nigeria, particularly the 1990s. The practical application of the research findings is possible in the teaching of world literature and comparative literature: understanding the mechanisms of rhizome and intertext can enrich literary analysis methods in university courses, help translators and literary critics more accurately interpret culturally complex texts, and contribute to African studies and postcolonial studies by expanding the understanding of how local stories become universal.

Kabakova S.A., Amrenova S.B., Znamenshchikova D.A.

Abstract

according to a sociological survey conducted by the international community of GlobalNR research companies and the «Romir» research holding, Russia is considered one of the most conservative among developed countries. Psycholinguistics as a science emphasizes the importance of linguistic personality, patterns of thinking at all levels of text organization: lexical, syntactic, morphological, phonetic. In the research of Egorova M.A., Komalov L.R., Ostapenko A.B. it is emphasized that these facts make it possible to link social norms and traditions acceptable in a particular country, related to gender differences between men and women, with linguistic self-expression. The peculiarities manifest themselves consciously or involuntarily and provide a stable basis for conducting sociological observations, forecasting trends in the development of the Russian language, as well as its differentiated teaching. The primary problem of the research lies in the lack of knowledge of gender stereotypes in the Russian language in the process of forming meaningful models of male and female speech. The purpose of this article is to trace the presence of linguistic means in the organized speech of both sexes caused by these biases. The tasks of the work include a description of gender psychological characteristics, an analysis of their characteristic written features, and a practical analysis of essays. The study is based on introductory essays by applicants of the Ishim Pedagogical Institute named after P.P. Ershov (branch) of University of Tyumen. The article proves the position of the mutual influence of gender patterns on the written style of presentation and formulation of thought, which expresses the importance of psycholinguistics in understanding linguistic processes.

The image of the heart in the poetic consciousness of P.P. Ershov

Vyushkova I.G., Silchenko G.V.

Abstract

the aim of this study is to understand the image of the heart in the poetry of P.P. Ershov based on an analysis of three poems created by the poet during his Tobolsk period: "Feast of the Heart," "Treasure of the Soul," and "Temple of the Heart." The research's novelty lies in the fact that the evolution of the image of the heart in these poems is examined for the first time in the context of the development of P.P. Ershov's love for S.A. Leshcheva. As a result of the study, the authors conclude that the image of the heart in these texts is central, possessing religious content and expanding its meaning through the images of the soul and the temple. It is also noted that the composition of all three poems is based on opposition, which allows for the individualization of the lyrical subject in each text. The results of the study are of interest to specialists studying the poetry of Russian Romanticism and can also be used in historical and literary disciplines in schools and universities.

A dynamic model of a critic's linguistic personality (based on the example of W.H. Auden's essay "American Poetry")

Shcherbina P.A.

Abstract

the article analyzes W.H. Auden’s literary-critical essays, particularly “American Poetry” from The Dyer’s Hand (1962), to reconstruct a dynamic model of his linguistic personality as a critic. The research follows an anthropocentric approach, viewing the text as a reflection of the author’s individual and cultural consciousness. Structural-stylistic, pragmalinguistic, and cultural analysis methods are applied to identify key parameters of Auden’s linguistic and cognitive style, characterized by intellectual reflection, irony, and philosophical depth. Special attention is given to the interaction between linguistic means and value orientations that shape his critical stance and communicative strategy. The study constructs a model of Auden’s linguistic personality as a multi-level structure integrating individual, professional, and cultural components. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the linguistic personality’s role in literary criticism and advance interdisciplinary research at the intersection of linguistics, cultural studies, and cognitive stylistics.

Lingvopragmatic features of expressing emotionality in a literary text (based on A. Matveeva's story "In the Picture")

Yuan Y.

Abstract

this article examines the features of the lingua-pragmatic expression of emotionality in a fictional text using A. Matveeva's short story "On the Picture". The study addresses the challenges of defining the theoretical foundations for studying emotionality in fiction, systematizing the linguistic means of expressing emotionality at various levels, describing the functional and pragmatic characteristics of emotive units, and establishing their role in creating an artistic image. The methodological basis is formed by the works of scholars in the fields of emotiology, lingua-pragmatics, and text linguistics. The analysis revealed that emotional expression in a fictional text is realized through a multi-level system of interacting linguistic means. The central mechanism for creating emotionality is the metaphorization of the main character's internal state, the contrasting juxtaposition of stylistic devices, compositional elements, and color symbolism. The results of the study can find practical application in teaching courses on text linguistics, stylistics, and linguopragmatics, in the analysis of contemporary literary texts, and in further research on A. Matveeva's work. The identified techniques and methods of expressing emotiveness contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of the emotional impact of literary texts on the reader.

Motifs of home and theater in Naguib Mahfouz’s novel “The Celebration of the Sublime”

Gadzhimuradova T.E., Sultanbegova Z.Z.

Abstract

the article examines two leading motifs in the novel by the Arab writer and Nobel Prize laureate in literature Naguib Mahfouz, “The Celebration of the Sublime.” The work belongs to the mature period of the author’s career (published in Cairo in 1981; translated into Russian by V.N. Zarytovskaya in 2008). The novel “The Celebration of the Sublime” is a parable that combines philosophical depth, social sharpness, and rich imagery. Despite Mahfouz’s recognition as an outstanding writer, this novel remains insufficiently studied, especially in Russian literary scholarship. The article attempts to fill this gap by analyzing the motifs of home and theater in the novel. All characters – those permanently or temporarily living in, or occasionally visiting, the “old” house – are connected to the theater as their second home. The boundary between these worlds is fragile and easily crossed. The attitude toward home and theater helps to understand the essence of the problems raised in the novel. The motifs and symbols of home and theater become tragic symbols of insoluble contradictions, the collapse of family order, trials, and losses that force the protagonist into eternal wandering in search of himself and his “nest.” The insufficient exploration of the symbolic level of the novel and its philosophical potential determines the relevance of this study.

Multilingualism and its role in modern societies: language as a means of integration and conflict

Gorbach S.R.

Abstract

in the context of globalization, the phenomenon of multilingualism is becoming increasingly important as a factor of integration and interaction between different ethnic and social groups. Multilingualism promotes cultural exchange and mutual understanding, but at the same time it can become a source of conflict and social tension. The problem of the balance between dominant and minority languages remains relevant for modern multinational states, which determines the need to study the impact of globalization and migration processes on linguistic diversity. The study is based on an analysis of data on the language policy of various countries and examples of legislative initiatives reflecting the problems of the dominance of one language. Methods of comparative analysis of historical and socio-cultural precedents, as well as quantitative and qualitative approaches are applied to assess the influence of linguistic factors on intercultural communication and social stability. It has been revealed that multilingualism simultaneously acts as a mechanism of social integration and a factor capable of provoking conflicts. The predominance of one language in multiethnic societies leads to the infringement of linguistic rights of minorities and the intensification of interethnic contradictions. Examples from the history of the United States, Europe, and Russia show that an unbalanced language policy can lead to discrimination and cultural assimilation. At the same time, the development of multilingual educational programs, translation technologies and digital communications contributes to strengthening mutual understanding and preserving cultural diversity. Modern forms of state and personal multilingualism (on the example of Switzerland, Canada, India and the Russian Federation) demonstrate the possibilities of harmonious coexistence of languages under the condition of legal equality. Multilingualism is a key element of social dynamics, influencing the development of intercultural relations and the sustainability of society. To prevent language conflicts and preserve cultural heritage, a comprehensive language policy is needed to ensure the equality of all linguistic communities. Effective management of multilingualism is possible only if its integration potential and the priority of cultural dialogue over linguistic dominance are recognized.

The influence of the dominance of textual categories on the interpretation of German religious parables

Gorshkov I.P.

Abstract

in this article, the main object of study is the texts of parables, which play an important role in conveying moral and spiritual lessons in both the German religious tradition and other cultures. Eight religious parables were selected for analysis. The article presents a comparative analysis of these parables using the example of the parable of Augustine's Abraham and Santa Clara and one Gospel parable, applying a two-pronged approach to examining the parable as a type of text and as a literary genre. At the first stage of analysis, this approach made it possible to identify not only a hierarchical picture of the five text categories involved in the formation of the parable, but also the dominant categories among them. The second stage describes the activity of the invariant features of each of the categories in the realization of the genre characteristics of the parable. The interpretation of the results obtained allowed us to draw parallels between the participation of text categories in the formation of this genre and the construction of the text type, which is especially important for the reader's perception of the parable.

this study focuses on the intentionality of journalistic texts, or media discourse. The aim of the study was to examine the intentionality of German media on the example of Der Spiegel magazine reports and articles about former (at the time of writing) US President Donald Trump. The following objectives were pursued: 1) to examine the linguistic means used in the German press in 2024 regarding Donald Trump; 2) to identify the author's communicative goals – to inform or influence readers, to create a certain perception of the politician, or to persuade them; 3) to examine the interaction between authors intentions and reader intentions and to confirm the hypothesis of their synchronicity. The study revealed that the authors' intentions are to convince readers of certain qualities of the politician and are synchronized with perceptions of the audience. About the Yakut blacksmith term suokhapchy

Akimova A.S.

Abstract

the aim of this study is a semantic and etymological analysis of the term suokhapchy, which is used in the blacksmithing of the Sakha people. Our objective is to: 1. Briefly review the religious beliefs of the Sakha people related to blacksmithing. In the heroic epic olonkho and in Sakha beliefs, Kydai Bakhsy is the patron and leader of blacksmiths. He is considered the patron of blacksmithing and the creator spirit of great blacksmiths and shamans. His image carries ambivalent connotations, possessing a dual nature of good and evil. He is a creative spirit, but at the same time, he has a demonic origin. Blacksmiths enjoyed special honor and respect in society. Their craft was considered sacred and had deep mythological and ritual roots. Blacksmiths were perceived as bearers of higher knowledge and supernatural powers, capable of resisting evil spirits. Like shamans, whose gifts were also passed down through generations, blacksmiths had a strong connection with the other world. 2. Define the term ‘suokhapchy’. Analyze the semantics and etymology of the term ‘suokhapchy’ (meaning "nail-making"). In traditional Yakut beliefs, blacksmithing tools, including suokhapchy, had powerful protective powers. They were used as amulets against evil spirits, and in particular, against shamans. This research may have practical applications in documenting and preserving unique linguistic and ethnographic data related to blacksmithing and beliefs that may disappear over time. The study can also serve as material for linguists studying the development of language, the origin and evolution of terminology in a specific professional field, as well as the influence of religious worldview on the formation of vocabulary.

Moksheninova O.M.

Abstract

this article explores the phenomenon of the Russian-Church Slavonic linguistic personality based on discursive practices as a sign of knowledge representation, according to the specific stages of development, which occurs at three main levels. The main objectives of the study are to describe the concept of discourse in relation to the linguistic personality, interpreted in the paper as Russian-Church Slavonic, and to present discursive practices as a sign of the representation of the Russian-Church Slavonic linguistic personality's knowledge of words and their interpretation, syntactic constructions of the Church Slavonic language, and the specifics of their translation into Russian. The paper considers discourse as a special form of language use, which involves the creation of a text that registers the communicative manifestation of the Russian-Church Slavonic linguistic personality in written form. Since each discourse has its own addressees, the paper takes into account the fact that communicants are prepared to perceive information at the semantic, pragmatic, and interactional levels. Particular attention is given to the role of metalinguistic communication, which is based on the transfer of social experience in understanding the identification of linguistic units understood as the main concepts of the Slavic linguistic worldview, as well as the representation of knowledge of stereotypical Church Slavonic constructions – the "Dative Case with Infinitive" and the "Dative Independent" – as ways of expressing the mentality of this worldview.

The problematics and imagery in Mahmud Taymur’s cycle of stories about superstitions

Gadzhimuradova T.E., Isaeva M.M.

Abstract

the article analyzes a cycle of short stories by the classic of modern Arabic literature, Egyptian writer Mahmud Taymur, devoted to the theme of the origin and exposure of superstitions. Belonging to the older generation of writers, Taymur raised pressing social issues of the 1920s-1930s, including fascination with European values and the neglect of national traditions. His works also reflect his search for new genres and forms, influenced by European literature. These changes manifested in plot construction, character depiction, and stylistic techniques. The article examines Taymur’s stories written in 1925-1926, forming a cycle about superstitions, including “Sheikh Juma,” “Sheikh Seyyid the Simpleton”, “Amm Mitwalli,” “Sheikh Naim, Imam or ‘The Polygamist,’” and “The Sheikh of Security.” While noting the kindness and naivety of ordinary people, the author sharply criticizes the negative aspects of their lives. The stories demonstrate the strengthening of realist tendencies and the emergence of new socially differentiated characters.

Communicative perspective of utterance based on the material of Church Slavonic

Moksheninova O.M.

Abstract

this article examines the nature of the communicative perspective of utterances based on Church Slavonic material. The main objectives of the study are to describe the construction of the communicative perspective of utterances based on subject-predicate-object situations in Church Slavonic, analyzed from the perspective of three types of addressing presented in hymnographic works: narrative, vocative, and self-addressing. The proposed reasoning and conclusions may be useful to anyone interested in constructing a communicative perspective on utterances based on subject-predicate-object situations with relevant liturgical addressing in Church Slavonic. An analysis of subject-predicate-object situations highlights the significance of not only the communicative and lexical aspects, but also the functional-grammatical ones. Therefore, exploring the functional-semantic field with a subject-object core contributes to the expansion of the linguistic worldview.

Linguistic features of poetic language (based on the works of the Russian artist Vladimir Borovikovsky)

Glukhov I.Y., Perederiy S.N.

Abstract

the problem of the relationship between different types of art is one of the fundamental philosophical and aesthetic issues that requires a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to understanding the nature of artistic creation. In the context of Vladimir Lukich Borovikovsky's work, the study of the linguistic features of poetic language as a universal means of artistic expression that can transform from verbal to visual and vice versa, creating a unified semantic space of culture, becomes particularly relevant. Borovikovsky's painting is a unique phenomenon in the history of Russian art at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, where the visual image takes on the characteristics of a poetic text, demonstrating the profound unity of artistic thinking regardless of the specific form of its material embodiment.
