Social media as a tool for political mobilisation and participation in the Republic of Chad

Abstract

the republic of Chad, located in Central Africa, is a prime example of how developing states face unique challenges in the media system. Despite its underdeveloped economy and infrastructure, Chadian media play an important role in shaping public opinion and providing access to information. This article analyzes the impact of social media platforms (such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter) on political mobilization and civic participation processes in the Republic of Chad between 2014 and 2021. The specific ways in which these digital tools are used to disseminate information, coordinate civic initiatives and shape political positions in the Chadian context are explored. The focus is on both the opportunities that social media offer for strengthening civil society and fostering political engagement, as well as significant obstacles, including problems of misinformation, censorship, internet blackouts, and security risks for activists. It is emphasized that despite existing limitations and the digital divide, social media play a key role as a channel for alternative political communication.
