Tactics of Pitch Convergence in Natural British English Conversation
Abstract
The article is concerned with the convergence of pitch contours in British English natural communication. The study examines the prosodic characteristics of backchannels and turn-taking in terms of their pitch convergence. The results of the study testify to the fact that interlocutors adapt the melodic components of their speech and implement different convergence tactics in the course of interaction, i.e. pitch alignment of backchannels, synchronic intonation and musical interval.



The Principle of Least Speech Effort in British English (based on youth speech)
Abstract
The given article presents the generalization of the previous studies of the pronunciation variation (the segmental level) in the speech of young native Standard British English speakers. Changes within the systems of vowels and consonants, and the phenomena of compression and decompression are associated with the loose manner of pronunciation. The analysis of the obtained results proves that young educated Brits use modern pronunciation innovations minimizing their speech efforts.



Speech Tactics of Self-presentation Strategy in Institutional Communication (based on the speeches of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly)
Abstract
The study investigates the persuasive strategies used in speeches of the heads of delegations delivered before the UN General Assembly at the 73rd Session. The study also aims to identify language tools and methods for creating a positive image of a politician and their country, as well as strategies for achieving the set goals.



Phonological Status of R-Sandhi
Abstract
R-sandhi is a cover term for two types of liaison aimed at breaking hiatus that occur at word boundaries in non-rhotic accents: linking-r and intrusive-r. Phonetically, they are considered to be the same linguistic phenomenon given the existence of a series of similar factors (phonological, grammatical, lexical) that may influence their usage, and their hiatus-breaking function. Both types of liaison are connected diachronically in the sense that they are the result of historical loss of [r], and intrusive [r] is explained in terms of a process of analogy.



Phonetic Strategies of Speech Impact in British Advertising
Abstract
The article describes the phonetic atributes of advertising discourse, which is considered as a complex polymodal medium of communication, constantly in search of new genre formats and effective techniques. The auditory and computer based acoustic analysis used in the work made it possible to identify the major intonation-prosodic strategies of advertising discourse that have an explicit or implicit speech impact on the audience at the melodic and temporal levels.



Legal Translation in a Multicultural World: Sociopragmatic and Linguocultural Aspects
Abstract
The subject of this article is the analysis of translation activities in the field of Law in the modern multicultural environment, the factors that have a beneficial effect on the result and process of legal discourse of text translation is identified. The author interprets legal translation as a specific type of linguistic mediation, shows the special importance of socio-pragmatic and linguocultural components of legal translation. It is concluded that the quality of translation largely depends on the personality of the translator, his linguistic and sociocultural experience.



The Regions of Spain: the Protection of Minority Languages and Their Culture
Abstract
The article discusses the problem of protection minority languages is in Spain. Documents of a legal and administrative nature, articles of the central and regional press served as the material. Description, analysis, synthesis and generalization were used as research methods. The study concluded that the situation in the regions of Spain depends on the political will of local administrations, which do not always succeed in pursuing a balanced language policy.



Lingua-Pragmatic Potential of Headings of the Italian Ground Forces’ Yearbooks
Abstract
The article examines the headings of the military yearbooks of the Italian Land Forces. To understand the functioning of the headings, their lexical-syntactical features are analyzed. Conclusions are made about the functions and implicit meanings of this type of Italian language military periodicals’ headings and the way they enhance the impact on the addressee. The headings of the military yearbooks play an important role due to the linguistic means that help assume the main information of the whole text.



Multilingual Component of Conlang on the Example of Minionese
Abstract
In literature and cinema, fictional author’s languages, often singled out among constructed languages, serve as a large-scale artistic device, performing a world-forming or plot-forming role and offering additional distinctive qualities to characters. The creative component of this linguistic construct has a significant scientific and cultural potential and reflects the linguistic diversity of the surrounding world.



Lexical Constituents of the Metalanguage of Narrative
Abstract
The article suggests a solution to the problem of establishing a core vocabulary group serving to explicate the metanarrative level of narration, considered as a reflexive level of communication about the narrative itself as the subject-matter of speech. Such methods as the component analysis of meaning, the computer analysis of frequency and contextual analysis enabled the author to establish the basic composition and functionality of the lexical markers of metanarrative in English.



Conflictogenity Factors of the Student Discourse in the Multicultural Education Environment
Abstract
The article focuses on the analysis of the key conflictogenity factors of the student personal discourse in the multicultural education environment. The results of the interview carried out in a number of Moscow universities has laid the foundation for the analysis. The authors have concluded that the student personal discourse is initially conflict-generating due to competition and education-related stress.



On Verbal, Para- and Extraverbal Communication (perception of American English and British English by Russian subjects). Part 1
Abstract
According to the results of a series of experiments on subjective decoding based on perceptual-auditory and perceptual-visual types of analysis of multilingual communication, basic knowledge is accumulated and implemented in visual and auditory images that complement each other. Paraverbalics is an additional source of information, which, in the process of the foreign language speech perception, becomes basic knowledge about the communicants and the communicative situation. The results obtained confirm the presence of an evaluative statement of perceptual features correlated with ingrained intercultural characteristics.



Gestures in Documentary and Fictional Film in Cinema of Vichy France
Abstract
He present article examines gestures of speakers in pieces of screen (scenes from the fiction film “Courbeau” and also from documentary material) produced during the Vichy period in France. The analysis is conducted in accordance with the functional and communicative approach to gestures within the theory of A. Cienki and C. Müller. The main hypothesis put forward lies in the following: professional actors tend to prefer pragmatic gestures whereas documentary characters use mainly self-adapters.



Semantic and Syntactic Peculiarities of Sentences with the Comparative Marker Like in Modern English
Abstract
The article presents the results of the semantic and syntactic analysis of the comparative construction with the marker like. It has been found out that this construction can perform the functions of the predicative, adverbial modifier of manner, adverbial modifier of comparison and attribute, and is characterized by the syncretism of meanings. The author describes the factors that help differentiate the adverbial modifier of manner and the adverbial modifier of comparison.



Phonological Features of Plattdeutsch
Abstract
The article focuses on Plattdeutsch, the so-called Low German, which includes dialects that are spread in the north of Germany. The article considers the geographical area of distribution and use of Low German, analyzes phonological feautures of the vocal system and consonant system, it gives phonological characteristics and provides examples from the systems of vocalism and consonantism. Using the method of comparative analysis and the method of linguistic analysis allows to establish some similarities and differences between Low German and the German pronunciation standard.



Prosodic Characteristics in English and German Political Discourse as a Means of Influencing the Audience
Abstract
The paper analyzes the prosodic characteristics in the speech of four British and four German politicians in course of public speaking, it also examines the role of prosody in verbal interaction with opponents and the audience. The results of auditory, acoustic and statistical analyses revealed the melodic, temporal and prosodic features of speech in English and German political discourse and their role in influencing the listener.



Correlation between Prosodic and Nonverbal Means of Communication in Political Discourse (gender study)
Abstract
The article examines the role of the gender factor in the correlation between prosodic means and accentuating gestures in political discourse. The results of the study reveal the gendered nature of the interconnection. Men-politicians use nonverbal means to accentuate words more often than women. Correlation between gestures and such prosodic models as “fundamental frequency + intensity” and “fundamental frequency + intensity + duration” is common for both male and female politicians.



Specific Features of British Young Speakers’ Dialectal Pitch Patterns (‘Map-task’ experiment in Glasgow)
Abstract
The study is focused on specific features of young Scottish English speakers' pitch patterns in the ‘map task' experiment. Specific features of dialectal young speakers' pitch patterns are frequent rises, rise-falls and levels compared to the southern standard. Factors of talk-in-interaction and newness of information affect the pitch form of repeated words. An exceptionally narrow pitch range of tones facilitates the increase of the level tone frequency as a pattern which was not mentioned previously by British authors.



Types of Latin Loanwords and Expressions in the Legal Vocabulary of the English Language
Abstract
Legal professionals of the whole world make use of the English legal language in different situations of the legal field. However, it is important to understand that during the process of historic development the English language experienced a significant influence of the Latin language. The article describes the influence of the Latin language on the development of the English legal vocabulary, classifies Latin borrowings on the basis of various criteria, analyses types of discourse where Latinisms are typically used as well as focuses on their functions in the modern English legal language.

Soviet Reception of Western Neo-Avant-Garde: the Nouveau Roman and Group 63
Abstract
The paper studies the Soviet reception of Western Neo-Avant-Garde, that is a number of experimental movements in literature in 1950s-1970s. The articles about Neo-Avant-Garde in Soviet periodicals, such as “Literaturnaya Gazeta”, “Novy Mir”, “Inostrannaja literatura” and “Voprosy literatury”, as well as their ideological context are analyzed. The examples of French Nouveau Roman and Italian Group 63 are used to demonstrate the attitude of Soviet critics towards experimental literature throughout decades.



Chronotopic Structure of the Novels «Les Roquevillard» by A. Bordeaux and «Le Feu» by A. Barbusse
Abstract
The article analyzes the chronotopic structure of the novels by Henri Bordeaux “Les Roquevillard” and Henri Barbusse “Le Feu” and its role in the formation of their poetics with the help of comparative-typological, cultural-historical methods of analysis. The article poses questions concerning the dichotomous nature of space in novels under study as well as the nature of the influence of the chronotopic structure on the formation of the system of images of the novels - particularly on the creation of the correlative pair “individual - collective”.

Art Education as a Mechanism of Socialization and Inculturation in Modern Russia
Abstract
This article is devoted to the problem of the development of art education (in this case we are talking about the initial stage of art education - children’s art schools) at the present stage. The author identifies the main problem vectors that require theoretical understanding and development of strategic and tactical solutions for the development of the art education system: the issue of cultural prerequisites and cultural foundations of the art education system, bringing to the fore the content of educational programs; the issue of cultural conformity of modern art education, compliance of learning outcomes with stated value orientations and certain directions of state cultural policy; the issue of strengthening the educational component of art education. The research is based on elements of a systems approach.



“I’m Wooing a Great Talent for You”: Creative Connections of Alexander Ziloti and Mikhail Gnesin (for the anniversary of the musicians)
Abstract
The article is dedicated to Alexander Ziloti and Mikhail Gnesin. The article analyzes the joint performances of musicians, their active musical and social activities, which made a huge contribution to the development of the artistic culture of St. Petersburg at the beginning of the twentieth century. The purpose of the article is to characterize Gnesin’s works performed according to manuscripts in the Ziloti enterprise in 1908-1912. The anniversaries of the musicians, which took place in 2023 - the 160th anniversary of the birth of A. I. Ziloti and the 140th anniversary of the birth of M. F. Gnesin, are an excellent reason to once again refer to their creative biography.
