Phonological Status of R-Sandhi

Аннотация

R-sandhi is a cover term for two types of liaison aimed at breaking hiatus that occur at word boundaries in non-rhotic accents: linking-r and intrusive-r. Phonetically, they are considered to be the same linguistic phenomenon given the existence of a series of similar factors (phonological, grammatical, lexical) that may influence their usage, and their hiatus-breaking function. Both types of liaison are connected diachronically in the sense that they are the result of historical loss of [r], and intrusive [r] is explained in terms of a process of analogy.
