Typology of communicative strategies in Russian and English business communication: a comparative analysis

Bochkareva T.S.

Abstract

this article presents a comparative analysis of communicative strategies in Russian and English business communication. The relevance of the study is driven by the needs of international business, where effective cross-cultural interaction depends on understanding the national and cultural specifics of business communication. The aim of the study is to identify the differentiating features of communicative strategies in Russian and English business discourse. The methodological framework is based on E.I. Sheigal's classification. The empirical data comprises a corpus of 800 business communication texts. The results reveal significant differences: Russian discourse is characterized by an anthropocentric model focusing on personalized relationships and phatic communication, while English discourse demonstrates a logocentric model emphasizing direct clarity and depersonalized communication. The practical significance of the study lies in the potential application of its findings for developing intercultural communication training programs aimed at enhancing business interaction effectiveness between representatives of Russian and English linguistic cultures.

Linguistic representation of the concept "morality" in modern English: a corpus-based discourse analysis

Brisker M.V., Mokritskaya E.A.

Abstract

this article presents the results of a comprehensive linguistic study aimed at identifying and conducting a multifaceted analysis of verbal markers that represent the concept of "morality" in the synchronic slice of the modern English language. The methodological paradigm of the research is based on an integration of corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis methods. The empirical foundation comprised data from the largest representative corpora – the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), enabling a comparative analysis that accounts for national and cultural variations. Within the study, we not only identified and classified the primary and secondary linguistic markers but also conducted a detailed semantic-cognitive analysis, revealed their frequency of use, distribution across text types, and their typical collocations (frequency, distribution, collocational profiles). Furthermore, we established their pragmatic functions within various types of discourse (political, media, academic). A special focus of the research is concentrated on the semantic dilemma of "morality / ethics." Through a comparative analysis of contextual environments and discursive practices, we determined the points where the meanings of the words «morality», «moral», and «ethics» coincide and differ, highlighted their unique features, and identified the typical contexts for the use of each.

Children's folklore discourse of a regional nature as a resource for studying children's communication

Vorobyova L.B., Mitchenko Z.V.

Abstract

the article is devoted to the study of children's communication in the Pskov folklore discourse. The object of study is the mockery, taunts, and riddles as separate genres of the "Children's Folklore" module of the regional digital cluster, which demonstrate elements of provocative discourse. The work is carried out in the aspect of the problems of philological regional studies, which is the study of the Pskov folk speech and Pskov folklore. Narrative texts are the most important units of communicative dialectology, and it is the dialect system of the national language that explicated the traditional culture. The introduction of new empirical material into scientific research allows us to consider the issues of children's subculture in an interdisciplinary manner, from the perspective of linguoculturology, ethnopedagogy, and psychology. The specificity of the material highlights the discursive aspect of the topic and enables us to study the verbal forms of the "childhood" sphere and the ways in which it is represented in language. The study uses methods of social and humanitarian sciences, such as cognitive-discursive, systemic-structural, and contextual analysis. The authors conclude that Pskov folklore is part of the all-Russian folklore, and the texts of many genres, including children's folklore, recorded in Pskov, represent variations of well-known all-Russian plots. The specific features related to linguistic dialectal characteristics in the fields of phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar are limited in the genres of children's folklore.

Comparative characteristics of the functioning of verbal somatic PHE in the English and Russian languages

Zeynalova D.A., Dibirova A.M.

Abstract

in recent years, phraseology has become the object of intensive study. There are many works based on materials from various languages dealing with various aspects of phraseology, their origin and functioning. The successes in the study of various aspects of phraseology based on materials from different languages and in comparative terms are obvious, since all these studies contribute to the development of a whole layer of phraseology. All this has theoretical and practical value. The results of the conducted comparative study can be used in the practice of teaching English, comparative grammar, lexicographic practice, as well as in theory and practice of translation. A large proportion of verbal somatic phraseological units has been selected in the work. Verbal somatic phraseological units in English and Russian are units of the language system in the form in which they are registered in the corresponding dictionaries of these languages. The phraseology of each language has a systemic character. Due to the anatomical and physiological data of representatives of different ethnic groups, the universal nature of the laws of logical thinking and the interaction of languages, phraseological parallels with varying degrees of equivalence can be found in the somatic phraseology of these two languages.

Culturological aspect of translation: strategies for overcoming interlingual barriers in the context of globalization

Eremina N.V., Strizhkova O.V.

Abstract

the article examines the transformation of the translator's status in the context of digital globalization: from a technical executor to an active cultural mediator. Based on an interdisciplinary methodology integrating the principles of linguistics, cultural studies, and translation studies, a systematic analysis of key strategies for overcoming culturally determined barriers is conducted. The focus is on the dichotomy of "domestication" and "foreignizing translation" (L. Venuti), pragmatic adaptation (J. House), as well as the ethical dilemmas associated with strategy choice. It is proven that, despite the progress in machine translation systems, the creative and cultural-mediatory function of the human translator remains central, elevating them to the status of a key agent in intercultural dialogue. Research prospects are linked to the analysis of translation in new digital environments and the study of the influence of artificial intelligence.

Syntactic government of intransitive verbs in the Udmurt language

Efremov D.A.

Abstract

this article is dedicated to the study of verb government in the Udmurt language. The research is based on the analysis of factual material – examples presented in the National Corpus of the Udmurt Language. Due to a combination of inherent properties, Udmurt verbs can govern various forms of nouns (pronouns) and other verbs; a distinction is made between strong and weak types of government; transitive and intransitive verbs exhibit different combinatory capacities. As a result of the conducted research, a distinctive property of Udmurt intransitive verbs was identified – some of them, depending on their contextual environment, acquire the ability to govern the accusative case. This property of the verb is proposed to be designated by the term syntactic government.

The microsystem of means for expressing prospectivity in English: a synthesis of classical and modern approaches

Sakharova N.S., Kabanova O.V.

Abstract

the article presents a comprehensive analysis of the microsystem of means for expressing prospectivity in the English language. The research integrates classical grammatical theories with modern approaches, in particular, Construction Grammar and the theory of grammaticalization. It is proven that prospectivity is realized not by a paradigm of forms of a single category, but by a network of competing constructions, each of which contributes unique modal-aspectual meanings. A central place is occupied by “the would + infinitive construction”, interpreted as a polyfunctional unity rather than as an analytical form of the “future-in-the-past”. Special attention is paid to the role of hypotheticality as a scalar, rather than binary, category related to the speaker’s epistemic stance. The article introduces and examines in detail the concept of “narrative perspective” as a key factor determining the choice of a prospective construction. The article contributes to the theory of functional-semantic fields by proposing a model for describing prospectivity as a zone of interference of temporal reference, modality, and aspectuality.

Referential functions of the definite article in English and German

Krasnoschekov E.V., Luntovskaya D.D.

Abstract

this article examines the referential functions of the definite article in Germanic languages, specifically German and English, where the article plays a key role in defining the relationship between a linguistic expression and the object it refers to. Articles help determine the degree of familiarity or uniqueness of the referenced object, particularly in clarifying the definiteness or indefiniteness of the object. The study identified both universal and specific features in the referential mechanism of the definite article in both languages. The main differences are due to the greater grammaticalization of the German article and lexical and phraseological features. It was established that complete functional overlap is observed in the use of the definite article in the sphere of situational (exophoric), anaphoric, and cataphoric reference. The key differences between these languages stem from the functions of the article, which are related to the case system, gender, and the specifics of its use in set and idiomatic expressions in German. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanism of reference in Germanic languages and can find practical application in courses on theoretical grammar, linguistic typology, and in the teaching of English and German. This article will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students studying English and German.

Cognitive mechanisms of metaphorical actualization of English phraseological units with a zoonym component

Pavlova I.N.

Abstract

this article examines the cognitive mechanisms underlying the metaphorical actualization of English phraseological units containing zoonyms. Phraseological units containing the name of an animal provide ideal material for studying the interaction between the figurative, conceptual, and linguistic levels of consciousness. Drawing on the methodological framework of cognitive linguistics (J. Lakoff and M. Johnson's theory of conceptual metaphor, the theory of metonymy, and Charles Fillmore's concept of frame semantics), the article analyzes the transformation of the primary visual image of an animal into a complex anthropocentric concept. The paper postulates that the actualization of the meaning of a zoomorphic phraseological unit in discourse is not simply the extraction of a static vocabulary unit, but a dynamic process of reconstructing an entire complex of cognitive structures: cultural stereotypes, metaphorical and metonymic models, and value orientations entrenched in the linguistic consciousness of English speakers. Specific examples are used to demonstrate how mechanisms such as conceptual metaphor, metonymy, and within-frame attribute profiling determine the semantics and pragmatics of phraseological units.

A semantic and linguocultural analysis of the imagery of the Lady of the Lake in Arthurian legends

Pavlova M.N.

Abstract

this article provides a linguistic, cultural and regional analysis of the images of the Lake Maiden in the cycle of legends about King Arthur. The works about the legendary king became famous in the Early Middle Ages and were influenced by historical events that took place at that time. Over time, the legends became more detailed and new characters appeared, which successfully merged into the overall plot. The origin of the main character of the cycle is still unknown, it is not possible to determine whether King Arthur actually existed or is a fictional character. Many of the images presented in the works of the Arthurian cycle were borrowed from Celtic mythology, for example, the image of the Lake Maiden echoes the heroine of mythological tales about fairies living in lakes and springs. The combination of mythology, descriptions of real historical events and many unanswered questions make the legendary cycle an interesting material for research. This article provides a brief historical summary and a linguistic and cultural analysis of the work and images of the Virgin of the Lake in the works about King Arthur. The conclusion of this paper presents the conclusions that were obtained after studying the empirical material. The materials of this work can be used in teaching activities in the framework of courses on foreign literature and regional studies.

Scriptological space as a semiotic system: functional and semantic analysis of graffiti

Streneva N.V.

Abstract

this study is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of the functional-semantic content of graffiti within the scriptological space – a limited surface (such as school desks) used for spontaneous inscriptions. The aim of the work is to identify and systematically describe the patterns and connections between the localization of graffiti in a specific sector of the scriptological grid and its substantive, meaningful, as well as communicative characteristics. To achieve this goal, the following tasks were set: 1) to conduct a critical review of contemporary domestic and foreign research in the fields of linguistics, semiotics of space, and sociolinguistics related to the phenomenon of graffiti; 2) to develop and test a methodology for field collection and mapping of graffiti texts linked to the scriptological grid; 3) to carry out semantic, pragmatic, and communicative classification of the collected corpus of texts; 4) to identify statistically significant patterns in the distribution of types of graffiti across space sectors; 5) to interpret the obtained data in the context of spatial semiotics theories and communicative strategies. The empirical basis of this research consisted of a corpus of 300 graffiti texts. As a result, it was proven that the placement of graffiti is not random, but follows deep patterns that reflect the intentions and psycho-emotional state of the scriptor (the author of the graffiti). The identified "dialogic" and "non-dialogic" sectors, as well as zones of concentration of specific types of discourse (invective, romantic, pragmatic), indicate a systematic organization of the scriptological space. The practical results can be applied in sociolinguistic diagnostics, educational psychology, the design of educational environments, and in the study of non-institutional forms of communication.

The role of language and speech and their interrelation in the communication process

Xiang N.

Abstract

this study is devoted to an in-depth study of the role of speech and language in the process of communication between people. In this work, the concepts of “language” and “speech” are consistently distinguished, and the key properties and functions of these concepts are determined. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the dialectical relationship between language as a system and speech as an activity: language is a kind of tool for communication, and speech saturates and edits language through the practice of its use. The theoretical basis of the research consists of modern and classical concepts of Russian and foreign linguistics. In particular, the work is based on the theories developed by F. de Saussure, the theory of W. Von Humboldt, as well as materials from the field of psycholinguistics (Leontiev A.A.) and functional stylistics (Kozhina M.N.). The results of the work can be applied in the field of language learning and teaching, rhetoric, intercultural communication and the development of language technologies.

Role and function of implicit assessment and self-assessment in political discourse

Timofeeva E.M.

Abstract

the article examines the features of implicit evaluation in English-language political discourse as a tool of ideological influence. The study is based on public speeches, publications, and social media statements of contemporary U.S. politicians (D. Trump, J. Biden, B. Obama, N. Haley, etc.) from 2016 to 2024. The aim is to identify the functional and pragmatic characteristics of implicit evaluative means used to shape audience emotions and beliefs. The methodological framework draws on the Appraisal Theory (M. Martin, P. White, 2005), complemented by discourse, content, cognitive-semantic, and pragmalinguistic analyses. The findings demonstrate that implicit evaluation, unlike explicit assessment, operates subtly, avoiding overt confrontation while establishing stable emotional attitudes. The study identifies key forms of implicit evaluation such as metaphor, sarcasm, euphemism, presupposition, and hybrid evaluative patterns combining positive and negative elements. It is concluded that implicit evaluation serves as a crucial instrument of persuasion, legitimization, and manipulation in political communication, ensuring the efficiency and emotional resonance of ideological messages.

Multimodal organization of prosodic and non-verbal means in parliamentary political discourse

Yakovleva T.O.

Abstract

this article is devoted to the theoretical understanding of the multimodal organization of parliamentary political discourse. The aim of the study is to clarify the conceptual framework of multimodal analysis in relation to political communication, as well as to describe typical configurations of interaction of verbal, prosodic and non-verbal components in parliamentary debates. The theoretical basis of the work is modern Russian and foreign studies of multimodality and political discourse. The article discusses criteria for identifying prosodic and kinesic parameters relevant to the description of rhetorical impact, and also substantiates the need for a corpus approach to parliamentary speech. Special attention is paid to the complex interaction of prosodic and kinesic means: it is shown that the prosodic complexes “pitch frequency + sound intensity” and “pitch frequency + sound intensity + syllabic duration” most often correlate with accentuating gestures, marking the key meanings of the utterance. A comparative analysis of the British and German parliamentary traditions makes it possible to interpret differences in the degree of expressivity, bodily involvement, and intonation variability as a manifestation of national and cultural beliefs about acceptable forms of public confrontation and norms of political polemics. It is concluded that the multimodal analysis of parliamentary discourse has significant potential for further linguistic and perceptual research.

Genre syncretism in John Green's novel «The Fault In Our Stars»

Isakbaeva P.V., Zaydullina D.A.

Abstract

this article explores John Green's novel «The Fault In Our Stars» («It's Not My Fault») from the perspective of its genre uniqueness. In the overcoming novel «It's Not My Fault» the characters struggle with a fatal illness, Hazel finds and loses a loved one, and she encounters both challenges and joys on her journey of self-discovery. The analysis of the text shows that the work is a complex synthesis of genre models of young adult fiction, a novel of upbringing (Bildungsroman) and a love novel, which are transformed under the influence of the central theme of cancer. It is proved that despite the use of traditional elements for teen literature, Green's novel goes beyond its limits due to its philosophical depth, intertextual references to classical literature and deconstruction of the cliche «stories about cancer patients». The purpose of the article is to identify and characterize the mechanisms of this genre syncretism and its role in creating a unique artistic statement. The research methodology includes comparative analysis, intertextual and motivational approaches. It is advisable to apply this analysis in practical classes on foreign literature, as well as in preparation for practical classes devoted to the study of foreign literature of the 21st century.

TV series titles as a mirror of social processes

Ismagilova A.R., Palutina O.G., Bagmanova N.I.

Abstract

this article examines the titles of television series in Russia, Argentina, and Brazil as tools for representing social processes. It examines social changes occurring between 1990 and 1999, using materials from the countries under study. Television series are not only a means of leisure and entertainment but also a televised model of social life. This model can be represented realistically, demonstrating the reality of a given society's way of life. Alternatively, the model is idealistic, depicting a desired form of reality. In both cases, titles serve as a mechanism for influencing potential audiences and attracting viewers' attention. This article presents the results of a comparative analysis of the semantic parameters of television series titles in Russia, Argentina, and Brazil. It is demonstrated that social processes can influence the choice of television series titles. The authors conclude that the semantic models of linguistic representation of television series titles in Russia, Argentina, and Brazil differ. The relevance of this study stems from the popularity of television series among large audiences and the fact that titles can serve as a kind of linguistic emblem of their content.

Military-oriented texts translation features: communicative-and-functional approach

Mamedov S.Z.

Abstract

the article is aimed at determining the relevance of using the tactics of pragmatic adaptation, as well as the tactics of proper information processing within the framework of the communicatively equivalent translation strategy while translating military-oriented texts. The examples of the translation of texts of the type with subsequent analysis aimed at confirming the applicability of the mentioned translation strategy and tactics aimed at its implementation are given. The scientific novelty of the study is reasoned by describing the principle of conducting translation activities in the military field from the point of view of the communicative-and-functional approach to translation, taking into account pragmatic factors such as the goals pursued by communicants and their national and cultural characteristics, as well as the peculiarities of Russian and English military terminology. A set of translation tactics aimed at implementing the chosen strategy in each communicative situation, in particular, pragmatic adaptation tactics and tactics of correct information proceeding within the framework of a strategy of communicatively-equivalent translation in translating military texts in order to confirm its applicability (based on the material of Russian and English) is also proposed. The results show the necessity not only to translate a military text from one language to another, but also to adapt it to a foreign recipient (in our case, a foreign military serviceman/ a correspondent, a student/cadet studying military affairs, a prisoner of war, etc.), based on the national and cultural characteristics, as well as the peculiarities of the Russian and English languages terminology formation standards.

Comparative analysis of the ways of idiomatic expression of the semantic core of the verb "igrat’" / "tо play" in the Russian and English languages

Pavlova I.N.

Abstract

this article provides a comparative analysis of idiomatic expressions representing the semantic core of the verbs "igrat'" (Russian) and "to play" (English). The aim of the study is to identify universal and linguistically specific features in the ways of conceptualizing and categorizing the sphere of "game" in the two linguistic cultures. Using modern dictionaries and text corpora, it is demonstrated that, despite the commonality of basic semes ("activity," "indeterminacy," "conventionality"), Russian and English languages develop significantly different idiomatic patterns. The semantic core of the Russian verb "igra'" (to play) in idioms gravitates toward the spheres of fate, risk, emotional instability, and social manipulation, while the core "to play" is more often associated with strategic behavior, rule-following, public activity, and functional use. The analysis is conducted within the framework of the cognitive-discursive paradigm, employing methods of componential and conceptual analysis. The results indicate profound cultural differences in the perception of gaming activities. This article examines both theoretical and practical aspects of linguistic expertise in humorous content. It analyzes the phenomenon of humor, its verbal characteristics, functions, and classifications. Special attention is directed towards the challenges arising from the identification of indicators of prohibited information within humorous texts, which are influenced by the subjectivity of comedic perception. Methodological approaches to the analysis of such texts are proposed, including the examination of creolized texts (internet memes) and oral discourse (stand-up comedy). The article is illustrated with examples and their linguistic analysis.

Semantic field of the word happiness: lexicographical and psycholinguistic description

Solomka N.A.

Abstract

the article presents the results of a study on the semantic content of the word happiness, which represents one of the fundamental human values, thus defining its special research interest. The study aims to describe the semantic field of the lexeme happiness, based on a comparison of lexicographical and psycholinguistic meanings. The lexicographical meaning is determined by the method of dictionary definitions, while the psycholinguistic meaning is formed through an associative experiment. The results of the associative experiment allowed, firstly, to identify semantic components for which a salience index was calculated, and secondly, to obtain three associative fields from which one integrated semantic field was constructed. The most frequent components of the associative field of the lexeme happiness were determined by examining and interpreting the obtained reactions. Furthermore, the semantic components were grouped into macropoles; and systemic relationships between the components of the semantic field were established. The analysis of the constructed macropoles revealed that, firstly, their boundaries are diffuse; secondly, semantic components belonging to the structure of different macropoles occupy a close position within the structure of the macropoles (central or peripheral); thirdly, frequent semes were identified that are part of the structure of most semantic components: 'absence', 'I', 'another'; and fourthly, the linguistic phenomenon of enantiosemy was observed in the semantic structure, both within a single macropole and across different macropoles.

Methods of countering fake news and information guides on social networks

Shchepichak S.S., Nikitin A.A., Nikitina T.I.

Abstract

the article is devoted to the analysis of media, social and communication practices of countering fake news and artificially constructed information channels in Russian social networks. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that digital platforms are becoming a key channel for the consumption of news content and a factor in shaping public opinion, while the dissemination of false information undermines trust in the media and enhances manipulative processes in communication. The purpose of the study is to identify and systematize methods of countering disinformation using the example of Telegram and VKontakte. The methodology is based on content and discourse analysis, comparative analysis of media practices and expert interviews. As a result, three groups of anti-fake practices have been identified: institutional, editorial, journalistic, and user-based. It is shown that the effectiveness of counteraction is determined by a combination of technological tools and communicative strategies of trust, transparency and self-regulation.

Definition of semantic field

Abiodun A.

Abstract

thе article demonstrates the application of the structuralist concept of paradigmatic meaning relations to the approach known as lexical field theory. Drawing on research in historical semantics, J. Trier introduced the term "semantic field," which he defined as a set of semantically related words meanings of which mutually constrain one another. A word's meaning can only be fully determined through its contrasts with other words within the field. From a diachronic perspective, this implies that any change in a word's meaning affects the meanings of other words connected to it. According to J. Trier, field members comprehensively cover the entire conceptual or subject domain without gaps or overlaps, meaning that lexical field boundaries can be precisely delineated. Furthermore, the article provides a linguo-historiographical analysis of the scientific works by Russian and foreign linguists who advocated for a systemic approach to the study of language phenomena (L.V. Shcherba, F. de Saussure, M.M. Pokrovsky). Their research laid the foundation for the development of field theory and the active application of criteria of system and structure in describing the lexico-semantic phenomena of language.

Value and semantic space of religious paremias: the relationship between folk and universal Christian axiological traditions

Plotnikova L.I., Krivosheev G.S.

Abstract

the article examines the phenomenon of folk religiosity in Russian proverbs of religious themes. The aim of the study is to identify the specificity of value dominants of folk religiosity and to compare them with general Christian dogmatic values. The research employs general scientific methods such as observation, analysis, synthesis, and generalization, as well as methods of systematic description of linguistic material, contextual analysis, and linguoculturological interpretation of recorded linguistic facts. Particular attention is given to identifying values and their realization in proverbs. The analysis has shown that folk religiosity manifests itself as a flexible, pragmatically oriented system of values in which religious principles are combined with everyday and social norms, forming a dynamic “compromise morality.” Proverbs reflect both coincidences with dogmatic Christianity and the practical-behavioral adaptation of faith, expressed in axiological ambivalence and variability of values. The results obtained confirm the autonomy of folk religiosity and its role in shaping the value picture of the world, as well as open up opportunities for further research in the fields of linguoculturology, paremiology, and axiology of Russian folklore.

Secondary linguistic identity in media discourse: towards the criteria of communicative appropriateness of biblical units

Zhu C., Dong L.

Abstract

the aim of this study is to determine the criteria for the communicative appropriateness of the use of biblical units by secondary linguistic personalities in contemporary media discourse. In writing this article, the author employed the following research methods: discourse analysis, contextual analysis, continuous sampling, and quantitative-qualitative analysis. The main results of the study include identifying six basic criteria for the communicative appropriateness of biblical units, determining the specifics of their use in media texts of various genres, and classifying the communicative strategies of journalists' secondary linguistic personalities. The author's conclusions from this study indicate that the communicative usefulness of biblical units is determined by the degree of precedent, functional load, addressee orientation, and genre-stylistic markings of the utterance. The practical significance of this study lies in the potential application of the author's findings in media linguistics and communication theory.

Abdulkadyrova A.B., Aliyeva P.G.

Abstract

the article examines the axiological components of the concept FRIENDSHIP in English and Russian linguistic cultures. The scientific novelty of the work is justified by the fact that no previous research has been conducted on the axiological components of the FRIENDSHIP concept based on media texts, which represent the most dynamic source of reflection and formation of society's values. The results of the study show that value components can be identified in each field of the complex structure of a concept through a comprehensive methodology, including interpretation and axiological analysis based on an assessment act. The identification of axiological components in the nominative and informational fields is carried out on the basis of data from lexicographic sources, and in the interpretative field - from modern media texts. The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the value components, reveals their national and cultural specifics, differences in the value picture of the world and the peculiarities of the mentality of speakers of the languages and cultures under consideration.

Folk laughter in the Yakut heroic epic-olonkho

Gogoleva M.T.

Abstract

this article explores the comic element in the epic style of the Yakut heroic epic olonkho, a little-studied area of olonkho studies. As the pinnacle of oral folklore, the Yakut olonkho preserves universal knowledge and the deepest emotional experiences of the people. The aim of this paper is to examine the problem of folk laughter in olonkho, identifying its functional, structural, and semantic features, as well as linguistic means of expression. The material used is the texts of major epics, containing descriptions of comic events, laughter-provoking characters, circumstances, humorous situations, and representative linguistic devices. The methodology draws on the fundamental works of researchers and utilizes a variety of approaches to analyzing the material. The scientific novelty of this work lies in its examination of folk laughter in olonkho as a traditional component of epic stylistics, yet largely determined by the skill of the storyteller. The study identified the structural and semantic components and functional characteristics of folk laughter in olonkho and demonstrated the linguistic techniques for conveying the comical used by famous storytellers. It was revealed that laughter in olonkho, conditioned by its ethnocultural content, has a variety of nuances, from subtle irony and humor to grotesque satire, and, as a unique component of epic poetics, is organically woven into the fabric of the narrative. The article draws on new information to develop a theory of laughter in Yakut oral folklore and also explores the prospects for a more in-depth study of the comic element in the epic heritage of peoples around the world.

Comparative analysis of the style-forming role of emophones in opera, theatre and cinematographic art

Borisova S.V., Goncharova V.A.

Abstract

this article presents an interdisciplinary study of the style-forming role of emophones – sound elements serving emotional and expressive functions – in opera, theatre, and cinematography. The relevance of this work is determined by the growing significance of sound design in contemporary artistic culture and the necessity for a systematic analysis of the mechanisms of emotional impact on the recipient. The research methodology includes comparative analysis, classification of emophones into types (verbal, non-verbal, musical, noise-based), and a historical-cultural approach. The study reveals genre-specific features of emophone implementation: musical conventionality and fixation in operatic scores; psychological depth and improvisational nature in dramatic theatre; complexity and technological control in cinematography. It is established that, despite fundamental differences in their realisation, all three art forms utilise universal techniques of emotional sound transmission (pauses, dynamic contrast, leitmotifs). Particular attention is paid to the trend of converging audio practices and the formation of hybrid forms in contemporary art. Promising directions for further research are identified: the analysis of emophones in immersive theatre and virtual reality, the study of musicals as a synthetic form, and interdisciplinary work at the intersection of art history and neuroscience. The research findings hold value for specialists in art theory, sound engineering, and media studies.

Linguocognitive modeling of the "morality" concept in English-language media discourse

Mokritskaya E.A.

Abstract

the article presents the results of a comprehensive linguocognitive analysis of the transformation of the "MORALITY" concept in the discourse of the modern English-language media space. The relevance of the study is determined by two main factors: firstly, the transition of moral discourse to the digital environment, where media not only reflect but also actively construct ethical norms and secondly, the modification of ways of verbalizing moral judgments under the influence of digital platforms, which have become the primary field for the formation and negotiation of value systems. A key result was the identification of a structural transformation of ethical concepts. A shift in the core of these concepts has been established from abstract binary oppositions to socially-oriented categories. New components have formed at the periphery: ambivalence (in complex television narratives) and performativity (in practices of virtual signaling). Significant changes in the collocational profile were identified, linguistic means were systematized, the emergence of new contexts for a range of ethical concepts was examined, and the linguocognitive structures of ethical concepts were analyzed. The conclusions of the study indicate a fundamental shift in moral discourse from normative ethics to a socio-performative model, where moral judgments become a tool for constructing identity and exercising power. The practical significance of the work lies in the potential application of its results for developing methodologies for the critical analysis of media discourse and for forecasting trends in public morality.

A study of the translation of key conceptual words of the Analects in Russian translations

Yang X.

Abstract

as a classic Confucian text, the Analects has had a profound influence on the philosophy and culture of China and the entire world. Despite their apparent simplicity, the concepts contained therein are rich in cultural content and are of great importance both for the translation of the Analects and for understanding Confucian philosophy. Despite the significant number of Russian translations of the Analects, there are few studies devoted to their analysis. This work uses Russian translations by V.P. Vasilyev, P.S. Popov, I.I. Semenko, L.S. Perelomov, and A.E. Lukyanov as source material. Based on the Analects with translation and notes (Lun Yu Jizhu) and dictionary interpretations in Russian lexicography, using the method of component analysis, more accurate equivalents are selected to convey the original meanings of the concepts. The peculiarities of word choice in these translations and the reasons for the formation of such peculiarities are also analysed.

Comparative analysis of the functions of the French particle donc and Russian zhe for expressing causality

Matveeva E.M.

Abstract

the article presents a contrastive analysis of the mechanisms for actualizing causality by the French particle "donc" and its Russian dictionary equivalent "zhe". It examines the status of particles as a word class in both languages and their functional-semantic potential, while also classifying their modal-expressive meanings that influence the expression of causal relations. The study is based on data from the French parallel subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus. The analysis reveals and compares zones of functional correspondence and divergence between the particles. Both particles function as pragmatic markers that implicitly express causal relationships based on shared knowledge and contextual logic. However, "donc" typically points to a consequence, prompting the addressee to reconstruct the cause independently, whereas "zhe" conveys causality by appealing to an obvious and known fact. The research findings can be applied in the fields of language pedagogy and translation studies. The identified functions and meanings of the particles will enable the improvement of teaching materials and methods for French and Russian as foreign languages, particularly in developing pragmatic competence in French learners, as well as systematizing translation strategies for conveying subtle modal nuances while minimizing interference and literalism.

Specific features of translating lexical units in technical texts at different levels

Yakovleva A.S.

Abstract

this article focuses on the specific features of translating lexical units in technical texts at various levels. In contemporary translation theory, identifying the "unit of translation" remains one of the core challenges. When comparing an original text with its translated versions, any researcher involved in the translation process invariably confronts the challenge of selecting an appropriate "unit of orientation," i.e., the "unit of translation." The paper investigates the main trends and principles of translation, as well as the specific characteristics of technical text translation. The research methodology involves a review of scholarly works by both domestic and international researchers concerning the discussed topic.

Analysis of translation methods into English of proper names in F.M. Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment" (based on the translation by K. Garnett)

Akinina N.V., Shubina N.G., Shcherbatenko O.A.

Abstract

the article is devoted to the topic of determining the optimal methods of conveying "speaking" names, taking into account their ideological and artistic function in the text. The purpose of the study is to identify the peculiarities of translating proper names into English in the literary text of F.M. Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment" and to determine the optimal methods of translating "speaking" names when transmitting ideological and artistic features of a literary work. The study of translation represents one of the most prominent areas in linguistic research, a prominence fueled by the necessity for communication across cultures and languages in a globalized society. Examining this subject allows for an understanding of the phenomenon's inherent principles and patterns of development, while also providing a foundation for determining translation strategies based on the textual significance of proper nouns. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time a comparative study of the equivalence of the source language onyms and their translation into English was carried out on the example of the translation of the text of the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky "Crime and Punishment", performed by K. Garnett, which makes it possible to establish the dependence of the methods and techniques of translating onyms on their national-semantic specificity. As a result, optimal methods of translating anthroponyms into English in the text of the analyzed novel are determined.

Transformation of the image of the monastery in the works of V.M. Shukshin

Kabakova S.A., Shadrina E.A., Miller P.S., Lyutova M.E.

Abstract

this study presents an analysis of the transformation of the image of the monastery in the works of V.M. Shukshin, covering both his short prose and his later work «Before the Third Rooster». Using the examples of the stories «Bright Souls», «The Master», «The Strong Man», «The Microscope», «In the Cemetery», the authors traced the changes in V.M. Shukshin’s view of faith and God. In the early stories, references to religion are fragmentary, while in the later ones they acquire integrity and ideological intensity. In the stories «The Strong Man» and «The Master», the temple is an abandoned place for people who do not see spiritual value in it. In the writer's interpretation, the monastery goes beyond the traditional concept of a sacred place, becoming a mirror of the complex and contradictory relationship of man with faith and established traditions. The story-tale «Before the Third Rooster» acts as a multifaceted study of the intersection of spiritual and mundane principles. In this work, the monastery appears as an arena of intense struggle between good and evil, where human weaknesses and vices open the way to chaos and destruction, and strong will and strength of spirit are necessary to preserve faith. The results of the work systematize knowledge about the life and work of V.M. Shukshin and can be applied in literary criticism for further research of the writer's prose and biography.

Punctuation as a tool of expressiveness: when a comma changes the meaning

Kabakova S.A., Alpatova D.A., Zakharova V.V.

Abstract

this article examines the analysis of the role of punctuation, in particular, the comma, as a tool of expressiveness of speech. The purpose of the study is to study the features of punctuation, as well as to find sentences and situations where one punctuation mark can change the meaning of the statement and affect the perception of the text by the reader. The objectives of the study include the study of the theoretical basis of the use of commas and the emphasis on how punctuation affects the meaning of the statement. Of particular interest are cases where a comma acts as a "semantic switch" that can shift the emphasis in a sentence, create ambiguity, and produce ambiguous syntactic structures. The paper focuses on how writers use punctuation marks to enhance the emotional impact of their writing. The article provides examples of how a comma can influence the interpretation of meaning in literature. The results of the study form the basis for subsequent scientific research in the field of punctuation as an instrument of expressiveness. The results of the article can be used in the preparation of educational and methodological complexes for disciplines related to stylistics and are of interest to linguists, teachers, and literary scholars. The information obtained in the study can also be used in the educational process when studying punctuation rules or in writing classes. Following the recommendations will help authors avoid the most common mistakes and take their texts to a new level.

Motivating provocative speech strategies and tactics in sports discourse

Nikolenko O.V., Murugova E.V.

Abstract

this article focuses on the functional features of provocative speech units in sports discourse. The authors aim to determine the effectiveness of provocative motivation, expressed through direct insult, in stimulating an athlete to achieve record-breaking results. In this regard, the paper examines two intentions realized through speech acts between a coach and an athlete: conveying a hidden meaning to the addressee for the corrective impact of the destructive mindset adjustment and indirectly inciting them to action, i.e. motivation to win. A common speech technique for achieving this is hinting as a unit of provocativeness, where the intentional meaning is deliberately concealed by the speaker to incite the interlocutor to deduce independently the obscured meanings. The selection of lexical and grammatical components of the motivating provocative utterance is carried out in close connection with the speech acts. It is the "here and now" situation that serves as an indicator for the text recipient on the existence of another meaning within the speech unit. Decoding this meaning (its actualization) must be performed in a non-trivial way, through mental operations that go beyond habitual patterns.
