Artistic translation concerns not only language aspects, but also extremely intricate components of culture: clothing, food, beliefs, value systems, ways of thinking, and much more. Ethnic and cultural differences influence all aspects of the language. So, there are often cultural gaps in artistic translation. In this article, based on the theory of cultural lacunas put forward by Russian and Chinese scholars, the translation of cultural lunes from Chinese into Russian is investigated on the material of V. M. Alexeev’s translations of Liao Zhai Zhiyi. Compensatory tactics of lacunas in the spheres of material, regime and spiritual culture are analyzed, pluses and minuses of translation are noted, and appropriate compensatory tactics are proposed.
