Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine South Korean healing literature. Healing novels, or Korean-style hygge, are books about living in comfort and healing the soul, a literature of psychological healing and consolation that has replaced the literature of trauma. In the course of the work, three of the most famous healing novels were analyzed: “Welcome to the Hyunamdong Bookshop” by Hwang Boreum (2022), “Uncanny Convenience Store” by Kim Hoyeon (2021), and “Marigold Mind Laundry” by Yoon Jeongeun (2023). As a result of the study, we came to the conclusion that psychological escapism, acting as a productive adaptation strategy, helps the characters, and with them the readers, to find solace and escape from the problems that concern them or look at them from a new angle.
