Abstract

The idea of the “American dream” is prevalent in the works of great American playwrights; the concept’s evolution and disappointment therein in the middle of the 20th century, in the aftermath of the Great Depression (1929-1939) and World War II (1939-1945), is that of great interest. In the article, several plays by this era’s leading playwrights are analyzed, the main features, symbolic and thematic, which illustrate the concept, as well as the ways in which they are used in deconstructing the concept are highlighted.
