Abstract

The paper presents the diachronic approach to translation quality assessment treated as 18th century meta-translational discourse. A retrospective view of the phenomenon through the discourse analysis of historical documents has revealed, firstly, the immutable law of content equivalence and, secondly, the priority of linguistic criteria in assessing the translation quality of a scientific work on ancient history. The latter factor is determined by the cultural pragmatics of the 18th century translation situation in Russia.
