Semiotics of French Women’s Fashion: from the Middle Ages to the Present

Abstract

The article presents results the analysis of semiotic properties inherent to women’s costume within the framework of the historical evolution of French fashion. Additionally, it elucidates the semiotic status of costume as a functionally interrelated ensemble of clothing articles. The conducted analysis unveils a diversity of symbolic characteristics within women’s fashion, consequently presenting the costume as an outstanding example of a communicative structure. The choice of topic is determined by the high social and ethical significance of clothing and fashion.
