Abstract
The article examines the features of the notion "legenda" of French-language geographical maps of the 16th century using the example of André Thevet’s maps. The textual and symbolic elements of the maps are analyzed, and the specifics of their linguistic and cultural content are revealed. The author uses the method of observation and contextual analysis to show how the geographical and sociocultural ideas of the era are manifested through the legenda of maps. The main conclusions underline the role of Thevet’s maps as sources of linguocultural data that reveal the mentality and perception of the world in France in the 16th century.
