Abstract

The research aims at a complex analysis of the semantic and functional properties of the Swedish word så. The task of the research is to discover the syntactic criteria which define its functional and semantic potential. When used adverbially, så functions as degree, extent and manner adjunct. As a syncategorematic word så can serve as a subordinating conjunction of consequence (less often of reason) in combination with att or on its own, but also as a coordinating copulative conjunction. Additionally, så is used as a discourse word, marking the beginning of the rhematic part of utterances containing an inversion with the placement of an expanded adjunct in the thematic position, as well as a reinforcing particle and an interjection.
