The purpose of this article is to consider the system of precedent toponyms in the Italian language, to analyze their semantic structure and pragmatic features when used in the discourse of Italian media. Special attention is paid to the issue of deonymization of precedent toponyms in Italian. As a result, it has been proved that precedent toponyms in the Italian media act as a powerful expressive tool that allows the authors of the articles to draw attention to the events described and to give visibility to what is happening, to position these events on the axiological scale, imposing their point of view on the recipient and often provoking him to take certain actions.
