Abstract

This paper aims to understand how toponyms function as parts of idioms in German. To that end, we use the overarching diachronic approach, as well as structural-semantic modelling, phraseological identification, comparative and etymohistorical analysis. The paper is of relevance as the rapidly growing field of semantics pays more and more attention to phraseology. The study takes a particular interest in deonymisation of toponyms in phrasemes. In this paper, we take a look at one common European idiom to showcase how useful the structural semantic modelling can be when analysing universal and national toponym containing idioms. It is also shown that there is a need to improve the method further taking research specific contexts into account.
