Resumo

The purpose of this study is to consider the main hypotheses of the origin of Latin palindromes as a linguistic, poetic and cultural phenomenon that reflects the universal aspiration of the human mind to mirror symmetry. The paper considers the diachronic aspect of the study of ancient and medieval Latin “magic squares” and palindromes in modern Russian and foreign science. The paper also gives an etymological and structural-semantic analysis of Latin lexical  palindromes and prepositional palindromes.
