The practice of using and interpreting the forms of renarrative and conclusive in constructions with speech verbs in the Bulgarian language of the late 19th century (based on the example of the forms of the imperfect, aorist, and present tense)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of grammatical markers of evidentiality in the Bulgarian language of the late 19th century. The author examines in detail the cases of using l-participle forms with a linking verb and without a linking verb in the 3rd person in retelling constructions, in which the transmitted information is introduced with the help of a referential verb. The material for the study is the correspondence of the second half of the 19th century between the Bulgarian linguist Naiden Gerov and his addressees (a total of 18 authors). The article presents and analyzes quantitative indicators of the use of verb forms in these constructions. The author provides an interpretation of grammatical evidential markers, referring to a broad context and taking into account the cognitive classification of information in the mind of a native speaker as received from other people's words or as one's own mediated information based on shared experience. In this article, the author applies a descriptive method, component analysis method, as well as the linguistic-textological method for material study. As a result of the research, we conclude that in narrative constructions with a referential verb, information may be classified differently in the author's consciousness. The type to which it belongs can be judged by the verb form used by the addressee. The most frequent form in the specified constructions is the l-participle without the copular verb in the third person. In this case, there is no clash of meanings between the lexical and grammatical evidential marker: both suggest a distancing of the authors from the conveyed information and highlight the semantics of retelling. When using the l-participle with the copular verb, the information is characterized as falling within the sphere of the writer's own mediated knowledge, which, in the presence of such a lexical evidential marker as a referential verb, complicates the interpretation of the statement and requires the involvement of a broad context.
