The representation specifics of nonverbal components of communication in the primary narrative (based on the long stories of A.P. Chekhov “The Story of an Unknown Man”, “Lights”, “My Life”): the linguistic aspect

Abstract

The article analyzes components of nonverbal communication in three primary narrative long stories by A. P. Chekhov ("The Story of an Unknown Man," "The lights," and "My Life"). The subject of this study is the linguistic means by which components of nonverbal communication are presented in remarks, in characters' lines, and in the author's narrative fragment. The purpose of this study is to determine the specifics of introducing nonverbal components into the structural parts mentioned above. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic analysis of the nonverbal components, that describes the characters, which allows to introduce the term "nonverbal personal constant of a character." The following methods were used in the study: contextual analysis of a text fragment, semantic and structural analysis of linguistic units, generalization, and descriptive-analytical methods. The following conclusions were drawn from the study: 1. The inclusion of nonverbal components in the author's narrative fragment indicates that the narrator does not remain neutral. He not only describes the nonverbal components of communication, but also draws attention to them and provides an interpretation. 2. Nonverbal components of communication can be represented in the text by single verbs, verb combinations and extended sentences. The article focuses on single verbs that contain a seme with the meaning of different characteristics of the pronunciation; on speaking verbs with a neutral meaning that have extenders with the meaning of the way of speaking. Character-specific gestures, often interpreted by the author and considered a character's personal constant, may also be included in remarks and in the author's fragment. 3. The communication can be formed as a minimized dialogue, which may describe both the content of the characters' speech and the nonverbal components. A character's line may also include the nonverbal components of the speaking character.
