Reflection of the events of the Time of Troubles of the early 17th centuryin the legends about the ancestors of Kayum Nasyri

Akchurin M.M.

Abstract

This article examines the legends about Gabderazzak, the ancestor of the famous Tatar scholar and educator Kayum Nasyri (1825–1902). The legends were written down by Kayum Nasyri himself from the words of the residents of the village of Verkhnie Shirdany. An analysis of the messages from these legends allows us to conclude that they could indeed reflect some events of different periods of the Time of Troubles that took place in the early 17th century in the Muscovite state.

Murzas and Service Tatarsin the Russian-Polish War of 1654–1667

Nogmanov A.I.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the participation of murzas and service Tatars in the Russian-Polish War of 1654–1667. This study is the first attempt to analyze this problem in Russian historiography. Relying primarily on documents of the Military Records Office published in the "Acts of the Moscow State", author determines the informative possibilities of this corpus of sources. Tatars from different regions of Central Russia and the Volga region participated in the war with Poland. In addition to the local army, they served in regiments of "new formation" (raitars, dragoons and soldiers), the importance of which grew as the military conflict developed. The establishment of this fact is a new word in the historiography of the service Tatars, as well as clarification of various circumstances of military service.

Participation of Ural (Yaik) Cossacksin annexation of Central Asia to Russia

Dubovikov A.M.

Abstract

The article shows the history of the participation of the Ural (until 1775 – Yaik) Cossacks in military campaigns in Central Asia and in campaigns to conquer it. Yaik Cossacks were the first Russians to make military campaigns in Central Asia. However, both of these campaigns, which took place at the very beginning of the 17th century, ended tragically for the Cossacks. During the reign of Peter I, Yaik Cossacks participated in the Khiva campaign of Bekovich-Cherkassky, but this campaign also ended with the death of the Russian detachment. For most of the 19th century, the Ural (former Yaik) Cossacks took an active part in expeditions to the territory of the Kazakh steppe, the purpose of which was to explore its territory in order to determine the optimal routes for future campaigns in Central Asia, as well as to select the sites of future steppe fortifications as intermediate points on the route and military support bases. In 1839–1840, they formed a significant (and best) part of General V.A. Perovsky's detachment, although this expedition also failed to achieve its desired goal. In the second half of the 19th century, military campaigns in Central Asia intensified sharply, and eventually this region was included in the Russian Empire. The Ural Cossack hundreds took an active part in all these military campaigns.

Murzas Kulmametyevs as part of the Siberian Tatar Cossack Regiment (1822–1849)

Aminov R.R.

Abstract

This article analyzes the service of the murzas Kulmametyevs in the Siberian Tatar Cossack Regiment in 1822–1849. The social status of the Cossack officer corps is examined based on the Charter on Siberian City Cossacks of 1822. The author introduces into scientific circulation information from the formulary lists of officials of the Siberian Tatar Cossack Regiment for 1844 and 1845, which allows us to create a portrait of the average officer from among the Tatar Cossacks of Western Siberia. The study revealed that some representatives of the murzas Kulmametyevs clan abused their high position in the regiment and were put on trial in the 1825–1830s. As a result of administrative reforms, Tatar City Cossacks in 1861 became part of the Siberian Cossack Army, which contributed to changes in some aspects of their service and socio-legal status.

Tatar sailors in the Crimean (Eastern) War of 1853–1856

Naserov S.A.

Abstract

170 years ago, on October 17, 1854, the 349-day defense of Sevastopol by Russian troops began in the Crimean War. This defense is also called the First Defense of Sevastopol, in contrast to the defense of the city in 1941–1942. The Crimean War began in 1853 and at the initial stage against the Ottoman Empire was accompanied by victories of Russian troops both on the land theatre of military operations and in the Black Sea. However, after France, Great Britain and the Kingdom of Sardinia entered the war on the side of Turkey, the position of the Russian Empire changed for the worse - Russia lost the most important battles on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula. Limited military operations were also conducted in the Baltic, the White Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Tatars of Kazan province were mainly recruited to the Baltic fleet, only a few were sent to the Black Sea Fleet. But from the southern provinces, especially Saratov province, where in some districts there were areas of compact residence of Tatars, Tatar recruits were periodically sent to the Black Sea Fleet. Tatar sailors took part in all the battles of the Crimean War – on land and at sea.

Nugman Kushaev. Military akhun in the service of the Russian Empire

Khamidullin S.R.

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the life and work of the military akhun of the Fair Mosque in Nizhny Novgorod, Nugman Kushaev. His service was dedicated to the performance of religious rites among the military ranks from the Muslims of the Nizhny Novgorod province in the middle of the 19th century. An equally important task of military imams was to bring all Muslims in military units to the oath of allegiance to the emperor when the rulers changed, or when new Muslim recruits entered the service. An even more difficult task was to find suitable words for co-religionists during the wars with the Ottoman Empire. Such tasks were set before N. Kushaev during his service in Nizhny Novgorod. For example, it was he who blessed the Tatar soldiers to fight during the Crimean War.

Historical prerequisites of the "Sister of Mercy" conceptin Tatar language

Gabdrafikova L.R.

Abstract

This article is a study about the participation of Tatar women in military medicine in the early 20th century: from the state-awarded service of doctor R. Kutluyarova-Suleimanova during the Russo-Japanese War to volunteers and nurses of the World War I (H. Akchurina, G. Izhbirdeyeva, M. Sainova, G. Sainova, Z. Talkovskaya, etc.). The names of many heroines from visual sources have not yet been identified, so new research is needed in this area. The introduction of the concept of "shafkat tutashi" into the Tatar vocabulary during World War I is also considered. The author concludes that the preservation of this concept after 1917 was due to its late appearance and the absence of semantic load in the form of stable associations with the Tatar culture of the imperial period.

The following pre-revolutionary newspapers in the Tatar language are used for analysis: "Tormish" (Ufa), "Vakyt" (Orenburg), "Koyash" (Kazan). The study of press materials makes it possible to assess the contribution of regional leaders to the development of the Temporary Muslim Committee, to form an idea of the methods of providing charitable assistance to the population of the Ufa province, and the human qualities of prominent Muslim figures who defended the interests of the Fatherland during the war. In particular, the focus of the research is on Salimgirey Dzhantyurin, Ibniyamin Akhtyamov, Gabdulla Ibragimov (Shnasi) and many others. Nogmanov A.I.

Abstract

This review is devoted to a recently published collection of documents and materials related to the development of naval shipbuilding in Russia in the 18th – first third of the 19th century. The author and compiler of the collection, I.Z. Faizrakhmanov, has been successfully developing this issue for a long time. In the reviewed publication, he introduces into scientific circulation a large corpus of sources found in the funds of the Russian State Archive of the Navy (St. Petersburg). The documents in the collection reflect various aspects of the activities of the Kazan Admiralty, one of the leading centers of domestic shipbuilding. The enterprise played an important role in strengthening the country's defense capability, ensuring, in addition to the construction of warships in Kazan, the procurement of ship timber for other Russian shipyards. In addition, the Admiralty participated in the administrative management of the peoples of the Volga region who performed the lashman duty, was engaged in the registration and protection of forest lands, and the implementation of other tasks set by the state. The materials of the collection expand the range of sources on the history of the Volga-Kama region in the Petrine and subsequent eras, are of interest to historians, lawyers, philologists, and all those interested in the history of their native land.
