Sources about the Battle of Molodi (2)

Komarov O.V.

Abstract

The article studies the sources about the Crimean Khan’s campaign to Moscow in July-August of 1572 and about the battles that took place there. These sources are represented by a large number of military documents and chronicles written in the 16th–18th centuries. Their texts have been studied and compared. Comparison of sources with each other allowed us to separate out the array of unreliable rumours and distortions. Service documents of the military department are designated as the main sources. The view from the Crimean side is represented by the letter of the Khan. False rumours are also of research interest, as they reflect the view of contemporaries on this war. The involvement of topographical data allows to clarify the places of battles and routes of troops movement. The article is intended to help researchers of the 1572 campaign.

The activities of the heads of the Crimean Tatars in Bakhchisarai in the last quarter of the 19th – early 20th centuries

Osmanov E.E.

Abstract

The city of Bakhchisarai turned into a district town in the Tauride province when the Crimea became the part of Russian Empire. The emergence and design of the local city government system gave an opportunity for more efficient and rational municipal economy management in the second half of the nineteenth century. This was reflected in the development of urban infrastructure. The central part of the city government system was the City Duma, headed by the chairman, who was also the head of the Uprava. Numerous questions depended from the actions of the mayor and the members of Duma: the development of urban economy, improvement issues, the support of the public education system and etc. This article analyzes the activities of the Crimean Tatar leaders of the Bakhchisarai city administration based on archival sources and published materials. The realities of everyday life of city residents and the changes that became possible thanks to the rational actions of city government bodies were shown. The purpose of this publication is to analyze the main issues and problems that were solved by the local authorities of Bakhchisarai, when the City Duma was headed by I. Gasprinsky, S. Chubukchi, M. Davidovich, S. Krymtayev, based on the materials of the City Council funds. In conclusion, the author comes to the opinion that the city administration leaders have achieved certain successes in solving individual issues of urban development, city improvement (road paving, water supply, electrification, construction of a cement plant), health care, and the everyday life of city residents. The archival materials also recorded cases of resistance from both local government officials and city residents.

“They defeated each other with an excess of cordiality and readiness to facilitate the most convenient movement of troops...”: Crimean Tatars and Karaites in the Crimean (Eastern) War of 1853–1856 and their assistance to the Russian army

Prokhorov D.A.

Abstract

. September 2024 marked 170 years since the landing of the Allied expeditionary force in Eupatoria, which marked the beginning of the 1854 campaign in the Crimean (Eastern) War of 1853–1856. The article analyzes the actions of the Crimean Tatars and Karaites who provided assistance to the Russian army. Based on identified archival documents (some of which are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time), as well as previously published sources, measures taken by the population to provide the military units of the Russian army with everything necessary are considered. The Crimean Tatars and Karaites, along with representatives of other ethno-confessional communities of the Taurida province, took a direct part in providing targeted assistance, which was urgently needed by soldiers and officers. Among the most notable activities of this kind are: financial and material support, organizing hospitals in the cities of Crimea, caring for the wounded, supplying fodder, food and catering, erecting fortifications, as well as direct participation in the heroic defense of Sevastopol. In addition, individual representatives of the Karaite community actively contributed to intelligence activities on the territory of the peninsula, providing valuable information to the command of the Russian army. After the end of the war, the Crimean Tatars and Karaites actively contributed to the restoration of the economy in the region, participated in the elimination of post-war devastation, and established a peaceful life. Archival documents, which reflect the measures of the Russian government to compensate for the damage suffered by the population during the fighting on the Crimean Peninsula, are considered.

The USSR’s Award policy towards Crimean Tatar servicemen of the Red Army and Red Navy during the Second World War

Chachi E.M.

Abstract

In this article the readers are offered analysis of the servicemen and partisans awarding from among the Crimean Tatars with State awards of the USSR for participation in the Great Patriotic War. There the dynamics of awards not only for each year of the war is presented, but also the dynamics for each individual award is given. For the first time the awarding of Crimean Tatars with toponymous medals “For defense ...”, “For liberation ...”, “For the capture ...” is shown. It is clearly evident that the number of awards has sharply decreased since 1944 as a result of the indiscriminate accusation of the Crimean Tatar people of mass betrayal. The coefficient was proposed which provides for the ratio of the number awarded representatives of a specific nationality to the total number of awarded, which clearly demonstrated the neutral attitude in awarding Crimean Tatars in 1941–1943 and bias in all subsequent years and decades. Examples of awards of individual servicemen of the Red Army and Navy awarded in different years and periods of military conflict are also given. The quality of awards and their gradation by war years were evaluated. An accurate calculation of the awards received for performing combat missions and participating in the largest Soviet military operations for each individual period is presented.

Literature and language

The first Ukrainian studies of the works of the classic of Crimean Tatar poetry Gazai (Gazy Giray Khan)

Humeniuk V.I.

Abstract

In the multifaceted creative heritage of Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko, a special place belongs to literary translations of the works of many European authors, as well as literary studies, which comprehend the significant phenomena and trends of the world literary process. I. Franko combines the talent of a researcher-analyst and a translator in his creative practice. Such is the article “Crimean Khan Gazi Giray (1588–1607) and some of his poems”, which is one of the most eloquent evidence of the oriental interests of the writer and scientist. Significant attention to the poetic creativity of the outstanding Crimean khan and poet is paid in the study of Agathangel Krymsky “Literature of the Crimean Tatars”. Ivan Franko and A. Krymsky examine the deeply dramatic life path of Gazy Giray Khan, who has chosen the pseudonym Gazai, and they also examine the circumstances of the appearance of his amazing works. In his translations, I. Franko, although does not adhere to the versification forms inherent to Eastern poetry, is trying to adapt them to the Ukrainian traditions, still quite accurately recreates the original imagery, life-affirming pathos, richness and sophistication of intonations inherent in the author's poetic speech.

An unknown work by A.S. Aivazov “The life of nations” (1906–1907)

Kerimov I.A.

Abstract

Almost 120 years passed since publication of A.S. Aivazov’s voluminous article “What Determines the Life of Nations?” in the magazine “Füyuzat” (“Blessing”) published in Baku in 1906–1907. This article remains unknown to contemporary Crimean Tatar researchers and Turkologists. Published over five issues of the magazine, it foreshadowed his public and political thought, which was fully reflected later during the work of the First Parliament – Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people in 1917–1918, where he served as a chairman for a certain period of time. The history of formation of nations, their life, culture, literature, economy, traditions and duration of their existence are the main questions raised and explored in this article.

Islyamova V.A.

Abstract

The various features of life and everyday life of the Crimean Tatar shepherds thanks to the notes and memoirs of travellers, local historians and eyewitnesses, who visited Chatyr-Dag in the 19th – early 20th centuries, were identified and comprehensively investigated in the article.
