Effect of chromium and tellurium impurities on the thermoelectric parameters of galena

Concentration dependences of the Seebeck coefficient, resistivity, and thermal conductivity of thermoelectric PbS crystals with chromium (0 < x ≤ 0.01) and tellurium (0 < y ≤ 0.03) impurities are examined in the temperature region of 300–800 K. It is shown that the introduction of chromium increases the number of free electrons in PbCrxS1–x crystals and reduces the Seebeck coefficient. However, an increase in the concentration of tellurium in PbCrxS1–x–yTey alloys raises the Seebeck coefficient while simultaneously reducing the thermal conductivity. As a result, the thermoelectric efficiency of PbCrxS1–x–yTey crystals increases. The reasons for the observed effects are discussed.

Modifying the physicochemical and electrical properties of tantalite and columbite surfaces under conditions of electrochemical treatment and high-voltage nanosecond pulses

Аннотация

Structural and chemical modifications of tantalite and columbite surfaces, induced by treating the minerals with anolyte—a product derived via the electrolysis of aqueous solutions—and high-voltage electromagnetic pulses, are studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and electrophoretic light scattering. The mechanical properties of the surfaces are characterized via Vickers microhardness testing. Treating the minerals with anolyte removes iron-containing surface films and leads to considerable conversion of surface-confined Fe(II) species into Fe(III), increasing the differences between the physicochemical and electrical properties of these rare earth minerals. The nonthermal impact of high-voltage pulses results in effective surface softening, a reduction in microhardness, and the disintegration of mineral particles, yielding surface micro- and nanosized phases enriched with iron and oxygen.

Resistive switchings and diode properties of heterostructures based on epitaxial superconducting Nd2–xCexCuO4–y films

Reversible and reliable bistable resistive switchings are observed in planar-type Nd2–xCexCuO4–y/Nd2–xCexO1.75/Ag junctions based on the Nd2–xCexCuO4–y superconducting films. Investigation of electronic structure of surface of the Nd0.5Ce0.5O1.75/Nd2–xCexCuO4–y via high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) show that the key factor for the switchings is the presence of an oxygen-deficient Nd2-xCexO1.75 phase, epitaxially intergrown on surfaces of Nd2–xCexCuO4–y.

Magnetic anisotropy and anisotropic tunneling magnetoresistance of compacted half-metal CrO2 nanopowders

Low-temperature magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of compacted ferromagnetic halfmetal CrO2 powders with nanoparticle shape anisotropy are studied. Magnetic anisotropy induced by the formation of magnetic texture during compaction is revealed. It is shown that tunneling magnetoresistance anisotropy is associated with the difference between a sample’s rates of magnetization in the longitudinal and transverse fields.

Contribution from structural Jahn–Teller ions to the elastic and ferroelectric properties of lithium niobate and lithium tantalate

Elastic and ferroelectric characteristics of single crystals of lithium niobate and tantalate are investigated in a wide range of temperatures by complex acoustooptic means. The contribution from Jahn–Teller NbO6 and TaO6 systems to the characteristics of elastic moduli, ultrasonic attenuation, and nonlinear optical coefficients is analyzed using a new phenomenological model. It is hypothesized that the displacement of Nb5+ and Ta5+ ions, which exhibit the second-order Jahn–Teller effect along trigonal axis C, and the subsequent ordering of octahedral, result in unusual elastic and ferroelectric properties.

Two series of nitrilotrismethylenephosphonic complexes of 3d elements, [MII(H2O)3{NH(CH2PO3H)3}]n (M = Cr–Zn) and Na8[MII{N(CH2PO3)3}]2nH2O (M = Co–Zn), are studied. A comparative analysis of their structural features showed the influence the Jahn–Teller effect has on the formation of the crystal structures, reactive capacities, and anticorrosive activities of these compounds.

Effect of atomic ordering on the role of grain boundaries in the plastic deformation of Ni3Fe alloy

The structure of dislocations and the defect structure of grain boundaries and their parameters in Ni3Fe alloy with short-range order (SRO) and long–range order (LRO) at different stages of plastic deformation are studied by means of transmission diffraction electron microscopy using thin foils and replicas. It is found that atomic ordering reduces the Σ3 twins plasticizing effect, increases the density of grain boundary defects, slows their annihilation during deformation, and intensifies the microstrains at the triple junctions of grain boundaries.

Using Auger electron spectroscopy to assess the effect of segregation on the interfacial characteristics of polycrystalline copper

The possibility of using AES data on the composition of a free surface to assess surface and grain boundary tensions, and the grain boundary strength of polycrystalline copper, is discussed. Using familiar theoretical models, it is shown that sulfur impurity segregation substantially reduces these characteristics, with the energy of grain boundary fracture lowered by 5–8%.

Ordering and magnetic properties of nanostructured CoPt particles

The kinetics of ordering in nanostructured CoPt particles is investigated. The low activation energy (58 ± 2 kJ/mol) of the ordering process indicates that the kinetics of ordering is not limited by bulk diffusion. Coercivity grows along with the degree of ordering and reaches its maximum value of 14.2 kOe upon the complete ordering of CoPt alloy with a crystallite size of no more than that of a single domain.

Synthesis of carbon planar structures with specified properties

A new method is proposed that allows an integrated technology to be used for the synthesis of carbon planar structures with predetermined properties. The method is based on the avalanche annealing of amorphous short-period superlattices. The synthesized samples are investigated by Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence. The possibility of synthesizing carbon layers with diamond-like, graphite-like, graphene, or other structures is demonstrated experimentally using the example of a C/SiC superlattice.

Structure and mechanical properties of Ni3Ge single crystals under severe plastic deformation and heating

Mechanical tests are performed for Ni3Ge alloy single crystals in the intense plastic shear deformation scheme under quasi-hydrostatic pressure at different test temperatures. Dependences of resistance to shear deformation on the Bridgman anvils’ angle of rotation are obtained. The microrelief of the surface damage of Ni3Ge single crystals fractured by plane bending after specimens were withdrawn from the Bridgman anvils is studied. X-ray diffraction patterns of deformed Ni3Ge single crystals are obtained.

Synthesis, microstructure, the complex nature of the magnetic state of lanthanum manganite weakly doped by bismuth

Structural, magnetic, and resonance studies of BixLa1–xMnO3 are performed. Nanopowders of weakly doped compounds (x = 0.0–0.1) with particle sizes of ≤40 nm are prepared using the sol–gel technique. Nanopowder sintering under the same conditions leads to a sharp increase in the mean granule size with increasing Bi concentration. The 55Mn NMR signal of manganites prepared via solid synthesis corresponds to rapid exchange Mn4+ ↔ Mn3+. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility reveal an inhomogeneity in the ferromagnetic state of the BixLa1–xMnO3 system.

X-ray circular magnetic dichroism in the presence of strong spin fluctuations

The use of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra for determininghe t magnitude of atomic magnetic moments in compounds of rare-earth and transition elements is discussed. The standard sum rule approach often yields a magnitude of moments that is often smaller than values obtained from magnetic measurements. We attribute this to strong spin fluctuations in the surface layers in which XMCD signals form. A way of determining the values of local magnetic moments in the presence of strong fluctuations is proposed and tested.

Valence state and X-ray photoelectron 2p spectra of chromium ions in the La1–xSrxCrO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5) system

Room-temperature Cr2p X-ray photoelectron spectra of samples of the La1–xSrxCrO3 system with x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 are obtained. The profiles of these spectra vary considerably with x. XPS analysis shows that the chromium ions are in a mixed valence state. The introduction of Sr2+ ions into the lattice is compensated for by the mechanism of Cr3+, Cr4+, Cr5+, and Cr6+ ion formation. Decomposition of Cr2p3/2 spectra into components with profiles corresponding to Cr3+, Cr4+, Cr5+, and Cr6+ ions has shown that the contribution from Cr6+ ions grows along with with x in the Cr2p3/2 spectra, while the contribution from Cr3+, Cr4+, and Cr5+ ions is reduced at higher x values.

Influence of the scale effect in testing the strength of rock samples

Aspects of the scale effect in rocks are considered within the statistical theory of strength. The results from testing the strength of rock samples of different sizes are presented. It is shown that the average tensile strength falls slightly, and its values drop substantially when the sizes of samples increase. A procedure is developed and tests are performed with the compression of granite samples ~6 mm in diameter. The possibility of using this procedure to identify the strength properties of rocks with allowance for the scale effect is discussed.

Phase transitions in a two-dimensional system of dipolar excitons in a double-well SiGe/Si heterostructure

The transition from a dipolar electron–hole liquid (EHL) to a spatially direct one in two-dimensional layers of a type II (buffer Si1–yGey)/tSi/sSi1–xGex/tSi/(cap Si1–yGey) heterostructure is studied via photoluminescence spectroscopy at helium temperatures and high excitation levels. This transition occurs when the sSi1–xGex barrier layer for electrons (a quantum well (QW) for holes), that separates electron QWs (tSi layers) gets thinner. The basic parameters of both types of EHLs and the lifetime of dipolar excitons are determined.

Formation of the structure and piezoelectric and dielectric properties of NaNbO3−KNbO3−CuNb2O6 solid solutions

Ceramics of the 0.5NaNbO3−(0.5–2x)KNbO3xCuNb2O6 system at x = 0−0.05 are produced via solid phase synthesis with subsequent sintering, according to the conventional technique. It is shown that introducing copper columbite into the (Na1–y, Ky)NbO3 binary system does not result in structural phase transitions; rather, it leads to the formation of K2Nb4O11 impurity phase with the structure of tetragonal potassium tungsten bronze. A correlation between the dielectric properties of the investigated solid solutions and their quantity and the density of the samples is revealed.

Anomalies in the reflection of an electromagnetic wave from the surface of a ferromagnet in a constant external electric field

Anomalies induced by an external electric field in the reflection of a TE electromagnetic plane wave, incident from without on the surface of a semi-infinite ferromagnetic insulator (in Voigt geometry), are studied. The effect these anomalies have on the magnitude and sign of the Goos–Hanchen effect for a beam of plane volume electromagnetic waves with s-type polarization, reflected from the surface of a ferromagnet, is investigated. The results are generalized to a one-dimensional ferromagnet–nonmagnet photonic crystal under the action of a constant electric field.

Ferromagnetic resonance linewidth in powders consisting of core–shell particles

The dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth on the thickness of nonmagnetic shells in powders consisting of ferromagnetic core–nonferromagnetic shell composite particles is investigated. It is found that an increase in shell thickness reduces the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth by several times, down to values comparable to those for coatings with compositions similar to that of the particle’s core. The observed effect is assumed to result from suppression of the inhomogeneity of demagnetizing fields in a powder consisting of magnetic particles.

Surface tension of copper in solid phase

Literature data on the surface tension of copper σs in the solid phase are reviwed. The σs values obtained by different researchers using the zero creep method are given. Physico-mechanical properties and micromechanisms of local deformation in thin near-surface layers of complex multiphase materials

Size effects in the local mechanical properties of multiphase materials are studied by means of micro- and nanoindentation. The numerical values of the elasticity modulus, hardness, and crack resistance of single phases and interphase boundaries in several rock samples (polycrystalline banded iron formations, granite, anthracite, sandstone, marble, and serpentine marble) are determined. The strongest and weakest intergrowth boundaries in the investigated materials are established. Thermal activation analysis is performed, and the activation and energy characteristics of local deformation in a material under an indenter are identified. The predominant micromechanisms of plasticity in single phases and inclusions in rocks under the action of high local stresses are identified.

Changes in the functional chemical compositions of surface and structural defects of diamonds, due to the nonthermal influence of nanosecond high voltage pulses

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), analytical electron and atomic force microscopy, and physicochemical examination of the structure and properties of mineral surfaces are used to study changes in the structural defects, functional and chemical compositions, and surface electrical properties and hydrophobicity of diamond surfaces exposed to nonthermal nanosecond high-voltage pulse treatment. The degradation of secondary mineral phase films, their peeling from the diamond surfaces, the growth of crystal hydrophobicity, and an increase in the number of B2 defects were observed after 50 s of treatment with electric pulses. Lengthening the period of irradiation (the dose) to 150 s resulted in oxidation of the diamond surfaces by products of water–air medium radiolytic decomposition, which led to the production of hydroxyl and/or carbonyl groups on the crystal surfaces, a further shift of the diamond electrokinetic and electrostatic potential into the region of negative values, and deterioration of the diamond’s hydrophobic properties.

Short-range order in disordered and ordered niobium carbide NbC0.83 from ab initio calculations

Structural models of short-range atomic vacancy ordering in nonstoichiometric NbC0.83 are proposed and investigated with and without allowance for long-range order. Using computer simulations, relations between the parameters of short-range and long-range order are derived, along with neutron diffraction patterns according to the Debye formula. Quantum-chemical calculations are performed using a super cell. The results show that short-range order is energetically advantageous in the disordered phase and in partially ordered modifications of an ordered phase at long-range order parameters η ≤ 0.4.

Estimating the proportionality coefficient in Rusanov’s formula for surface tension using kinetic data on the rates of nanoparticle evaporation and vacancy pore shrinkage

Confidence intervals for proportionality coefficient K in Rusanov’s linear dependence σ = Kr between surface tension σ and particle radius r are estimated for the first time using experimental data on the rates of small metal particle evaporation and vacancy pore shrinkage. The effect inert additions of complex oxide Ba2InNbO6 have on the structure and properties of solid electrolyte Ba2In2O5 is studied. It is shown that composite samples of (1 − x) Ba2In2O5 · xBa2InNbO6 acquire improved electrical properties, due to the stabilization of a highly conductive modification of barium indate characterized by a disordered arrangement of oxygen vacancies.

Effect of composition on the structural relaxation of amorphous iron-based alloys

The structural relaxation of iron-based amorphous alloys upon changes in their relative electrical resistance and magnetic moments upon a rise in temperature is investigated. The presence of Nb in Fe(Cu, Nb)–Si,B alloys stabilizes amorphous states, lowering the Curie temperature TCam and raising the temperature of the paramagnetic–ferromagnetic magnetic phase transition.

Torsion-curvature χ of a crystal lattice that occurs upon the deformation of polycrystalline Cu‒Mn and Cu–Al alloys is studied by means of transmission diffraction electron microscopy. The sources of χ are determined, the effect grain size has on the magnitude of χ is established. A linear relationship between χ and the density of the disoriented deformation boundaries is discovered.

Long-range atomic order and grain boundary ensemble in alloys with L12 superstructure

It is found experimentally that in the Ni3Mn and Pd3Fe alloys with superstructure L12, ordered through a two-phase region A1 + L12, an increase in the degree of long range atomic order is accompanied by a reduction in the special and twin boundaries’ angle of deviation from the special boundaries in the CSL model, and by a change in the special boundaries’ spectrum and its average energy. The dependence of the proportion of Σ3 twin boundaries within the spectrum of special boundaries and the average energy of special boundaries on the degree of long range atomic order is determined by the dependence of these parameters on the mean square displacement and probability of antiphase grain boundaries being superimposed on the boundary planes, and on the presence of second phases on special boundaries.

8. Субъект персональных данных вправе запретить своему оборудованию прием этих данных или ограничить прием этих данных.
