On Russian national corpus

Rakhilina E.V.

Abstract

The article describes the project of Russian National Corpus (RNC) – a powerful reference and information system in Russian language, created by a consortium of institutions belonging to the Russian Academy of Sciences and with the active participation of Russian IT-company Yandex. The history of the Corpus is presented in great detail: the author comments upon its main functionality and the most technologically advanced subcorpora – poetic, parallel, multimedian, providing examples of their use. Special attention is paid to the latest developments which allow us to introduce modern AI technologies in the RNC; this work was supported by a grant from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. One of the most impressive results is the so-called “panchronic corpus”, which encompasses the thousand-year history of the Russian language and provides searching tools within this data array. As of now, RNC is a crucial support for scientific research both in the field of linguistics and philology, as well as for the methodology of teaching Russian as first and second language and in the domain of IT technologies.

Corpora and corpus-based studies of the languages of the Russian Federation

Davidyuk T.I., Kibrik A.A., Mordashova D.D.

Abstract

The article describes corpus resources for the languages of Russia and their use in linguistic research. The linguistic diversity of the country is quite substantial: currently 155 languages are identified as languages of Russia. Many of them are under threat of extinction, which makes the task of creating corpora particularly relevant as a tool for language preservation. In this study we conducted a survey among the staff of the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other colleagues, which helped us collect the data about 73 corpus resources representing various languages and dialects of Russia. The sample covers both major languages and languages with relatively few speakers, including unwritten languages. The article examines various parameters by which corpora may differ, and offers examples of research based on materials from the corpora. The final part of the article discusses the organizational aspects of creating and maintaining corpus resources. The results of the study suggest that corpus resources not only play an important role in preserving the linguistic diversity of Russia but also represent a valuable tool for various research tasks, as well as for creating other language resources.

Russian academic lexicography and the National dictionary foundation

Moldovan A.M.

Abstract

The article is devoted to modern trends in the development of Russian linguistics, primarily to dictionaries and the National Corpus of the Russian Language. It is noted that the corpus representation of a language does not exist autonomously; it influences traditional forms of linguistic work and makes it possible to rebuild the technology of lexicography.

Nowadays, a printed dictionary can no longer provide complete information in a time-appropriate form. Therefore, many countries are currently creating various systems for electronic presentation of national dictionaries and connecting them with the language corpus. Such work is actively carried out in Russia, primarily by V.V. Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language of the RAS.

Poem by academician Ch.F. Graefe for the centenary of the Academy of sciences

Basargina E.Y., Dodeus M.N.

Abstract

The poem by academician of Greek and Roman literature Ch.F. Graefe, dedicated to the centenary of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, became a highlight of the anniversary events. It was written in Greek (and also translated by the author into German) and was intended for the President of the Academy of Sciences S.S. Uvarov, whom Graefe had been mentoring in classical disciplines for many years. A poetic translation of the poem into Russian was prepared for the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The article examines the main plot lines of the poem: a eulogy to the imperial family, a review of the collections of the Kunstkamera museum, a hymn to St. Petersburg and admiration for the power of the Neva.

Visibility of Russian university journals in the systems of national and international scientific and technical information

Mazov N.A., Gureyev V.N., Ilicheva I.Y.

Abstract

Current limitations of access to some international journal platforms and bibliographic systems for Russian researchers result in increased role of national journals for communication and knowledge spreading both at domestic and international levels. Consequently, correct information on Russian journals indexation in various bibliographic systems including underestimated open access databases seems to be topical. The analyzed sample includes journals published by Russian universities as the less studied ones compared to serials published by research institutes. We studied journals published by three types of Russian universities, i.e. Federal, National Research and Basic. Rapid increase in the number of new journals in recent years is demonstrated caused by financial support under different programs. Indexing of journals in Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions and Lens was studied over a period of 2018–2022. In the Dimensions and Lens we also studied the completeness of indexing as these databases index content using other approaches as compared to Web of Science and Scopus. A share of journals indexed by authoritative Russian journal lists Russian Science Citation Index and White List was revealed. The best positions were detected among journals published by National Research universities. However, Basic universities demonstrate positive growth, as well. The obtained results enabled us to conclude that journals published by Russian universities can be regarded as significant strategic information resource for representing Russian research results to international community.
