Infrared spectroscopy of europium borates EuM3(BO3)4 (M = Al, Cr, Fe, Ga) with a huntite mineral type of structure

Dobretsova E., Boldyrev K., Chernyshev V., Petrov V., Mal’tsev V., Leonyuk N.

Аннотация

Huntite-like EuM3(BO3)4 crystals (M = Al, Cr, Fe, or Ga) are synthesized by means of spontaneous crystallization from a solution in a melt. The infrared spectra of the compounds are measured. The experimental data and the results from ab initio DFT calculations are compared. The comparison shows that the compounds have a primarily noncentrosymmetric rhomboherdal structure with the R32 space group. This indicates these compounds could exhibit magnetoelectric and nonlinear optical properties.

Femtosecond magnito-optics based on photon echoes

Popov I., Vashurin N., Putilin S., Bahodurov A.

Аннотация

A textured three-layer ZnO/Si(P)/Si(B) film in an uniform longitudinal magnetic field with a stregth of 0.4 T exhibits the effect of the polarization plane’s rotation from a stimulated photon echo signal formed at room temperature on the exciton states. At time interval τ12 set to zero and time interval τ23 = 720 and 900 fs, the angles of rotation are 27° and 19°, respectively.

Photon echoes as means of studying defective surface structure of the crystal fibers of thin films

Vashurin N., Popov I., Putilin S.

Аннотация

Dependences of the decay of stimulated photon echoes excited in thin textured p- and n-type zinc oxide and silicon films characterized by different sizes of crystal fibers are studied. Two characters of recombination were revealed for localized excitons on crystal lattice defects, presented in the studied dependences in the form of fast and slow decay components.

Ultrafast spectroscopy of CdS/CdSe quantum dots

Shmelev A., Leontyev A., Zharkov D., Nikiforov V., Lobkov V., Samartsev V.

Аннотация

Results from the nonresonance spectroscopy of CdS/CdSe quantum dots (composites of CdSe–CdS nanoparticles (core–shell)) are presented. The nonlinear optical properties of CdS/CdSe QDs in PMMA are studied with fs pulses at 1053 nm using the transient lens technique. QDs generate rapidly oscillating signals with amplitude rise times of around 200 fs and decay times of around 500 fs, while pure PMMA polymer only generates an oscillating signal whose envelope coincides with its autocorrelation function.

Quantum dots in a fractal multilayer system

Abramov V.

Аннотация

The stochastic behavior of the strain fields of coupled systems (a fractal layer, a nanotrap, and quantum dots in a fractal multilayer nanosystem) is studied theoretically and numerically. As the semiaxes of a quantum dot shorten, the amplitude of the primary peak falls, a bump emerges on it, and the region of stochastic behavior shrinks in size. As the semiaxes grow, a broadened peak with a stochastic base in the background (a halo-type signal) forms.

Frequency control of the dielectric temperature coefficient of resistance in the process of relaxation polarization

Bogatin A., Kovrigina S., Bogatina V., Bulanova A., Nosachyov I.

Аннотация

It is shown that the dielectric temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) can be changed in the process of relaxation polarization. The TCR frequency dependences are calculated using the Debye model of polarization. When the signal frequency is altered, both the value and the sign of the TCR change. The effect of the change in the value and sign of the TCR when the frequency is altered is discovered experimentally in doped semiconductor barium titanate.

In situ Raman spectroscopic study of interaction between phengite and water under PT conditions typical of subduction zones

Goryainov S., Krylov A., Polyansky O., Vtyurin A., Zmeeva N.

Аннотация

In situ Raman spectroscopy is used to study the layered mineral phengite K(Al, Mg)2(Si, Al)4O10(OH)2 in water under the high temperature and pressure conditions typical of cold subduction zones (T up to 373°C and P = 12.5 GPa). High pressure and temperature were created in a resistively heated diamond anvil cell. Raman spectra show the high PT stability of phengite. No reversible polymorphic transitions (overhydration or notable amorphization) are observed.

Zyryanov V., Sutormin V., Krakhalev M., Gardymova A., Prishchepa O., Shabanov A.

Аннотация

A conceptually new approach for developing methods of control of liquid crystals is discussed. The approach is based on modifying surface anchoring. A brief review of the authors’ research on developing ionic-surfactant control of liquid crystalline materials is described. This approach is based on the effect of electrically induced modification of the boundary conditions by ions of surface-active compounds.

Plastic relaxation anisotropy in epitaxial films grown on miscut Si(001) substrates

Ilin A., Trukhanov E., Kolesnikov A., Loshkarev I., Pchelyakov O.

Аннотация

A way of calculating the structural parameters of semiconductor epitaxial layers grown on miscut (0 0 1) substrates is developed. It is shown that the difference between the tensor of film elastic strains and the spherical tensor of strains translating the film’s crystal lattice into the substrate’s lattice is a tensor whose components are proportional to X-ray strains. The technique is used to analyze GaAs and Ge0.2Si0.8 films grown on (1 1 13) Si substrates. The anisotropy of the degree of plastic relaxation is established for lateral directions perpendicular and parallel to the interfacial steps in the GeSi film. It is proposed that noninteger Miller indices be used to denote the direction and value of the rotation of the film’s crystal lattice with respect to the substrate lattice.

Transformation of cholesteric orientational structures and optical textures induced by the electric field–driven ionic modification of surface anchoring

Sutormin V., Timofeev I., Krakhalev M., Prishchepa O., Zyryanov V.

Аннотация

The reorientation of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a large helical pitch induced by the electric field–driven modification of surface anchoring is investigated. In the initial state, the liquid crystal cell has a homeotropic alignment of the director. An applied dc electric field produced a twisted homeoplanar structure of the cholesteric.

Orientation dependence of the interfacial energies of chromium and α-iron crystals at boundaries with nonpolar organic liquids

Shebzukhova I., Apekov A., Khokonov K.

Аннотация

Interfacial energies of chromium and α-iron at boundaries with nonpolar organic liquids are calculated within the modified variant of the statistical electron method. Calculations are performed with allowance for dispersion, oscillatory, polarization corrections and the contribution from temperature. The dependence of the interfacial energy on the orientation of metallic crystals, and on the macroscopic dielectric permeability of the organic liquid, is established. The profiles of the potential and electron density at the boundary of the phase separation are considered.

Investigating cracks in natural materials using the example of granite under explosive action

Victorov S., Kochanov A.

Аннотация

The formation of cracks in a natural material (granite) resulting from an explosive action is examined. Images of crack fragments and relief are obtained at different degrees of magnification using optical, electron, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The parameters of cracks as 3D objects are determined with allowance for the distance from the impact source. The roughness of the crack edges and the local increase in their width at a certain stage of propagation indicate a jump-wise character of their development, due possibly to aspects of the zone of failure localization forming at the tip of the crack in granite as a polycrystalline material.

Effect of lead concentration and electromigration on the kinetics of contact melting and phase formation in a Sn–(Bi + Pb) system

Akhkubekov A., Akhkubekova S., Bagov A., Tamaev T.

Аннотация

It is found that the kinetics of contact melting and the formation of contact layer structures depend on both the concentration of lead in the alloy and the direction of electric current during the process of contact melting. It is shown that direct current flowing through the zone of contact melting helps intensify this process and regulate the morphology of inclusions (their shapes, sizes, and direction of migration). The inversion of effective charge zBi*, compared to two-component systems with Bi participation, is observed.

Proton conductivity and the thermal properties of Ba2CeZnO5

Korona D., Ivanova I., Obrubova A., Sharafutdinov A., Animitsa I.

Аннотация

A cubic perovskite Ba2ZnCeO5 phase is obtained via solid-phase synthesis. This phase has the capacity for the reversible dissociative absorption of water from the gas phase. The resulting energetically inequivalent ОН groups are removed completely from the structure at temperatures above 650°C. Electrical conductivity measurements reveal a considerable (order-of-magnitude) increase in conductivity in humid air with \({P_{{H_2}O}}\) = 3 × 10−2 atm at T = 400–600°C. It is shown by EMF method that the sample exhibits proton conductivity that predominates at temperatures below 550°C.

Local structure and thermal properties of fluorine-doped perovskite related solid oxides

Tarasova N., Animitsa I., Belova K.

Аннотация

Fluoro-substituted Ba2CaNbO5.5 − 0.5xFx double perovskites and Ba2In2O5 − 0.5xFx brownmillerites are synthesized. It is confirmed by X-ray analysis that they are single-phase at 0 ≤ х ≤ 0.40 and 0 ≤ х ≤ 0.25, respectively. It is found that introducing fluoride ions into both double-perovskite and brownmillerite phases reduces the unit cell volume (due to shorter Nb/In–O bond lengths). The preferential positions for fluorine are those in niobium or indium tetrahedra. Energetically inequivalent ОН groups are the main form in which protons are found in hydrated compositions. Increasing the density of the dopant reduces the fraction of hydroxyl groups involved in strong hydrogen bonds.
