Resumo

The article is devoted to the changing role of Japan within the framework of the bilateral alliance with the USA. To begin with, the article considers the evolution of US-Japan relations up to the present stage. Further, attention is focused on the build-up by the Japanese side of military power and the modernization of the alliance with the USA under the governments of S. Abe and F. Kishida. The analysis allows the author to move on to the final part, which proves the growing importance of Japan in the context of the American strategy of the 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific Region'. The author discusses the prospects for strengthening Japan’s role in world politics as a key US ally in deterring China.
