Abstract
this study investigates the potential of open educational resources from TED Talks in the context of teaching English as a foreign language. The focus lies on integrating authentic multimedia materials that foster immersion in a natural linguistic environment and address critical pedagogical challenges, such as limited instructional time, mitigating cross-linguistic interference, and enhancing learners’ cognitive engagement. The research substantiates the efficacy of TED Talks lectures in cultivating and refining communicative competence, encompassing listening skills, discursive reasoning, and sociocultural adaptation. A three-phase instructional framework for video-based learning (pre-watching, while-watching and post-watching stages) is introduced, supplemented by targeted exercises to facilitate the gradual acquisition of language competencies. To achieve the study’s objectives, the following tasks are addressed: – Examining the unique applications of TED Talks resources in language didactics; – Identifying the pedagogical value of authentic audiovisual materials in advancing speech proficiency; – Designing exercises based on Jay Walker’s TED Talk “The World’s English Mania” for integration into foreign language instruction. This article explores the possibilities of using open educational resources from TED Talks, highlighting their significance for learning English as a second language. The media content of TED Talks creates an "immersive" effect in the language environment and helps address numerous challenges faced by educators: increasing the number of hours dedicated to learning a second language, overcoming the negative effects of interlanguage interference, and enhancing student motivation. The article describes the advantages of using the TED Talks media resource in the process of teaching a foreign language in order to form and develop communicative competence. The tasks that accompany the pre-watching, while-watching and post-watching stages of organizing the educational process using TED Talks lectures are presented. To achieve the aforementioned research goal, the following tasks need to be addressed: – studying the features of using open educational resources from TED Talks in the educational sphere; – determining the educational potential of authentic audiovisual sources of information in the context of developing students' foreign language communicative skills; – developing exercises based on video material from the TED Talks portal: Jay Walker's “The World's English Mania”.
