Abstract

The article explores the evolution of the status of the costume designer’s sketch for cinema - from an official artistic idea to an independent work of art in the context of the digital transformation of filmmaking. The article analyses how digital tools (CGI, 3D modelling, generative AI) transform the process of creating a costume, blurring the boundaries between a material object and its digital counterpart, and how this radically changes the ontology and perception of the sketch itself. It is proved that a sketch, especially in its digital and hybrid forms, acquires its own aesthetic and philosophical value, becoming a unique artifact that captures the moment of a creative idea before it is simulated in CGI or materialised. Its role as a “boundary object” between the idea and the embodiment is emphasised. The article also examines the growing phenomenon of digital art collecting (NFT, digital installations, tokenised sketches) as proof of public recognition of the autonomous value of intangible artistic objects.
