A Review of European Research on Content and Language Integrated Learning

Cimermanova I.

Аннотация

Introduction. Subjects’ integration in formal teaching can play an important role in addressing the issue of authentic and meaningful learning as opposed to rote memorisation. Content and language integrated learning has been the subject of educational studies for three decades. The scope of research is broad, and from the primary focus on foreign language performance, it has been slowly extended to the impact of Content and language integrated learning on content and mother tongue. The purpose of the research is to summarize selected research articles on Content and language integrated learning application and to estimate its summary average effect on content development in a group of students aged 10‒16.
Materials and Methods. The article presents the systematic review of the studies published in the Web of Science database in the last decade (2010–2020) and surveys the selected empirical studies that focus on the impact of Content and language integrated learning implementation on the content subjects at primary and secondary schools. Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. Data from six studies were also statistically evaluated using Comprehensive meta analysis and RevMan software, and the synthesis is presented in the Results and Discussion parts.
Results. Based on the 16 discussed studies’ results, Content and language integrated learning intervention produces positive added value; however, the statistical meta-analysis showed no statistically significant differences between the Content and language integrated learning and non-CLIL groups in their content knowledge and the results favouring non-CLIL groups. As the groups’ size differed in terms of absolute value, the pooled standard deviation was used to reflect the sample sizes and standard deviation were averaged with more weight given to the larger sample groups.
Discussion and Conclusion. The practical significance and prospects of the study lie in pointing out the benefits of Content and language integrated learning and stressing the importance of its inclusion in teacher training study programmes along with the development of pre-service teachers’ creativity, critical thinking and ability to create their materials.

High School Failure, a Systematic Review in the Social Sciences

Hernández-Ortiz S., Precht A., Cudina J.

Аннотация

Introduction. This study aims to examine the issue of high school failure in social sciences through a systematic review. It aims to provide a critical assessment of research on this subject. It seeks to question the very construct of high school failure, its premises, and the possible consequences from this perspective.
Materials and Methods. The research published between 2010–2020, both in Spanish and English in the Scopus and Web of Science databases (Core collection), was considered. A total of 171 articles were identified. After initial screening, 37 papers were finally selected. Semantic maps were created with the Vosviewer. The literature was examined to determine where high school failure is being researched, what type of methodologies are most used and, finally, what impact the research has had on our understanding of this concept.
Results. It was found that most of the research on the topic is done in the field of education, and that the methodology used is predominantly quantitative. The different definitions of high school failure tended to attribute its cause to one or more of four reasons: student failure, multicausal phenomena, social exclusion, and finally, disability in the education system.
Discussion and Conclusion. It is possible to understand that high school failure is understood and defined as mostly involving studentsʼ responsibility for the academic outcome and achievement obtained. Although studies that cover such factors as a multicausal nature, social exclusion, and the education systemʼs difficulty can be found, the responsibility for failure tends to be attributed to the individual student.

Rezer T.

Аннотация

Introduction. During the COVID-19 pandemic variety of digital tools and technologies were demonstrated owing to the global digitalization of education and the total transition to online learning. The purpose of present research is to determine factors of digitalization of education and their effect on transformation of social values among high school students in conditions of the COVID-19. The results of research on social values of students were considered using comparative analysis. It was revealed that the paradigm of values among young people changed from an individual-personal one at the beginning of the XXI century to the social oriented paradigm –tolerance, openness, public recognition through social networks, self-development and contribution to the community.
Materials and Methods. The analysis of pedagogical experience in the field of digitalization of education allowed to formulate the main factors of global digitalization of education and to highlight positive and negative aspects of online learning. According to M. Rokich’s method, an empirical study of instrumental values transformations was carried out among 137 students of Ural Federal University in the conditions of full-time online learning. A questionnaire method was implemented to determine studentsʼ attitude to online learning during COVID-19 pandemic and possibility for further development of this form of learning.
Results. It was revealed that only 13.7% of respondents did not notice any decrease in the quality of learning and did not experience discomfort in obtaining knowledge in online form. According to the studentsʼ opinion the values that are subjected to transformation are the following: efficiency, self-control, responsibility, honesty. It can be concluded that the era of network personality and new scientific knowledge in pedagogy has begun. Online learning is a fait accompli which requires scientific substantiation of a new didactics and social values system development among students in a digital education environment.
Discussion and Conclusion. Achieved results contribute to ecological system of new digital services that change life and educational activities of a human, as well as transform his personality and values system. Thus, for the purpose of health and emotional intelligence preservation in students the continuation of interdisciplinary study of various aspects of education digitalization is required.

The Social Competences of High School Students from a Contextual Approach

Tsvetkova I., Ivanova T.

Аннотация

Introduction. The formation of social competences of schoolchildren is an important area of modern science and pedagogical practice. Despite the large number of publications on this issue, there is virtually no research on the analysis of social context, which largely determines the practical implementation of social competences. The aim of this article is to analyse the high schoolʼs activities on social competence development using a contextual approach. The novelty of the approach lies in the identification of social competencies that characterize the effectiveness of the educational impact of the high school, taking into account the subjective context.
Materials and Methods. The empirical base of the study includes data collected from sociological surveys conducted in Togliatti schools in 2010, 2014 and 2019 in the monitoring mode (in 2010, n = 1 183, in 2014, n = 945, in 2016, n = 1 745; in 2019, n = 976). The collection of data in the monitoring mode made it possible to identify the dynamics of results over a ten-year period and to determine how well the high school is doing in terms of developing social competences.
Results. Among the social competencies that the high school forms, high school students note the ability to work with information, understand people, determine the propensity for science, independence, as well as a tolerant attitude to representatives of other cultures. There are contradictions in the formation of social competencies, and this is especially evident in the assessment of civic qualities. Over the past decade, the number of students who believe that school has prepared them for life has significantly decreased.
Discussion and Conclusion. The results contribute to the development of scientific concepts of social competences. The materials of the article will be useful for the study of problems and contradictions of value self-determination of the younger generation. The practical significance of applying the proposed contextual approach is to increase the effectiveness of the school in the formation of studentsʼ social qualities necessary for life in modern society.

Some Manifestations of Vindictive Behavior in Pedagogical Discourse

Zavrazhin S., Fomina M.

Аннотация

Introduction. The problem of vindictive behavior in modern pedagogy is poorly studied both at the theoretical and empirical level. It is only indirectly touched on in studies on disciplinary measures in the educational environment, the prevention of non-normative activity of children. The aim of the research is to learn the genesis of the problematization of vindictive activity in a pedagogical format, as well as to study experimentally the features of vindictiveness of at-risk adolescents.
Materials and Methods. The empirical part of the article highlights the results of an experiment to detect the features of vindictiveness in adolescents at risk using a questionnaire and diagnostics of the “Scale of resentment and vindictiveness” (E. P. Ilyin, P. A. Kovalev). 50 people took part in the survey. The authorʼs questionnaire includes an associative experiment to determine the semantic field of the concept of vindictiveness and a method for analyzing situations. The questionnaire “Scale of resentment and vindictiveness” involves determining a personʼs tendency to hostility through resentment and vindictiveness, by collecting questionnaire data-responses.
Results. According to the results of an empirical study, it was revealed that the vindictive activity of adolescents in the social risk group is a form of manifestation of frustration-driven conscious hidden aggression. In general, adolescents of the risk group are characterized by a high level of vindictiveness; gender differences in the description of the phenomenon are determined: underage students of rehabilitation centers are more prone to resentment, while male students are more prone to hostility.
Discussion and Сonclusion. The obtained results contribute to the development of the ideas about the determination of the vindictive behavior of minors in the social risk group, enrich pedagogical knowledge with the methodology for identifying destructive forms of establishing justice in young people.

Professional Thinking and Socio-Psychological Features of Managers in Education

Serafimovich I., Shlyakhtina N., Bobyleva N.

Аннотация

Introduction. The strategic task of improving the quality of Russian education requires increasing the efficiency of education system management. The authors assume integration of cognitive and personal resources of the subject of activity. The researchers focus on professional thinking as one of the cognitive resources. The aim of the article is to study the relationship between professional thinking and the socio-psychological features of personality.
Materials and Methods. The materials of the study were the data of a survey of 65 people. The authors used questionnaires and the method of analyzing problem situations. For statistical processing, the methods of mathematical statistics were used.
Results. It is shown that the situational-suprasituational level of thinking is predominant. The relationship between the level of professional thinking and the flexibility of choosing strategies of behavior in conflict and stress is established. There are similarities between the talent pool and managers with experience in conflict and stress behavioral strategies, and differences in management motivations. The new socio-economic reality and changes in the educational environment suggest that the manager should be ready to solve new heterogeneous professional tasks, which require expanding the range of competencies and a different level of reality understanding, integrating their own psychological structures, where professional thinking will play a system-forming role.
Discussion and Conclusion. The obtained results can be used in solving tasks of the Nation-wide Project “Educationˮ aimed at further training of teaching staff, and in administering the said programs of continuing education.

Babich I., Omarova V., Baratova A., Churkina N.

Аннотация

Introduction. The relevance of the problem of preparing prospective teachers of natural sciences for teaching in several languages is determined by the social need of society. Insufficient practical training of young specialists requires the search for effective methods to help solve the problem. The aim of the research was to study the impact of the integration of IBL and CLIL methods on the quality of prospective teachers’ preparation to teach science subjects (taking Chemistry as an example) in English. The integration of CLIL and IBL methods is proposed to prepare prospective teachers of natural sciences for teaching in English which serves as a foreign language in a multilingual environment.
Materials and Methods. Using the methods of pedagogical experiment, observation, testing, analysis of lesson recordings, descriptive and mathematical statistics, prospective science teachers’ speech acts as indicators of effective training were analyzed during the period of pedagogical apprenticeship. The research was carried out before and after learning in two groups of students studying with application of the CLIL method (control group) and the integration of IBL and CLIL (experimental group).
Results. Obtained results demonstrate the non-random pattern of the changes between the two groups of students. Experimental students expressed more directives. A significant increase was observed in high-level questions at the stages of lessons with the organization of independent student research. The types of directive acts have become more diverse than in the control group. The integration of the CLIL and IBL methods had a positive effect on the growth of indicators of the quality of student preparation.
Discussion and Conclusion. The presented results can be used to prepare prospective science teachers for teaching subjects in any second language. The results will be relevant for university lecturers in European and CIS countries who are looking for effective ways to train multilingual teachers.

Development of Communicative Competence in Junior High School Students with Visual Impairment in Different Institutional and Educational Settings

Kantor V., Nikulina G., Nikulina I.

Аннотация

Introduction. The diversification in education means, inter alia, establishing an institutional balance between integration and differentiation, which should also hold true for visually-impaired children. Junior age is a sensitive period for the development of communicative skills. Hence, one of the key tasks on the educational agenda for visually-impaired junior high school students is the development of communicative competence. The paper is the first attempt to identify how institutional and educational setting impacts the development of communicative competence in junior high school students, namely, such aspects of communicative competence as content/compliance with communication standards, attitude/role relationships, position/function, and involvement/activity.
Materials and Methods. The evidence was obtained from four schools in Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Region. The survey included 55 respondents in grades 1‒3 with deferent degrees of visual impairment from inclusive educational settings with partial integration / differentiation. The methodology included such tools as Effective Communication: Raising Awareness of Visually-Impaired Students; a scale-based interview and questionnaire; L. Mikhelson’s Communication Skills test modified by L.S. Kolmogorova; Joint Sorting by G.V. Burmenskaya; and G.A. Tsukerman’s Picture Dictation. The data was processed using Student's t-test for dependent and independent samples and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results. The assessment of communicative competence in schoolchildren embraced several aspects: content/ compliance with communication standards; attitude/role relationships; position/function; involvement/activity. In the context of inclusive education with partial integration and differentiation, visually-impaired junior high school students show different development levels of different aspects of communicative competence. This context has a selective and ambivalent effect.
Discussion and Conclusion. The results may find application in the design and testing of a variable modular programme aimed at the development of communicative competence in visually-impaired junior high school students. The results may also lay the foundation for the rehabilitation and training strategy for visually-impaired students and facilitate their integration in social and educational environment.

Close Gap Test Strategies for Students with Severe Speech Impairment

Gribova O., Almazova A.

Аннотация

Introduction. The level of formedness of text competence at secondary school in the aspect of understanding the text’s factual information ensures the successful grasping of the learning content. The purpose of the research was to identify the specifics of the functioning of linear deployment mechanisms and probabilistic forecasting among learners of 5–10th grade (form) with specific language impairment.
Materials and Methods. The modified close gap test method was used as the main research method at the level of the ascertaining experiment. The results of the close gap tests, filled by learners, were exposed to quantitative and qualitative analysis. The research was conducted by applying theoretical (interpretive) and empirical (ascertaining experiment based on author’s method) methods. The analytical stage involved the use of the method of correlation analysis, the mathematical processing was carried out with the help of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Results. Analysis of experimental data helped determine the close gap test strategies in adolescent students with specific language impairment. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of studentsʼ work was applied to determine three main groups of strategies for linear deployment and probabilistic forecasting: strategies for establishing semantic links at the level of the lexical component, a strategy for establishing links at the level of associations, and no strategy. Furthermore, the analysis of substitutes with regard to their compliance with grammatical requirements revealed the following typology of manifestations of agrammatism: the use of an inadequate part of speech, deficiencies of grammatical presentation in phrases, non-compliance of the grammatical form of the substitute with the requirements for the grammatical design of the sentence. Correlation analysis was applied to establish links between different types of close gap test strategies used by adolescents with specific language impairment, as well as their relationship with the levels of understanding the factual content of the text.
Discussion and Conclusion. The results obtained contribute to the development of developmental psycholinguistics, special pedagogy, speech therapy and school methods of speech development.
