Abstract
The article presents an overview of the history of the formation of American Studies in France and its development as a discipline during the 19th–20th centuries. The emergence began with the organization of expeditions of enthusiastic naturalists. The result was the formation of a specialized scientific community, connecting people whose scientific interests are focused on South America, and organization of large ethnographic and archaeological projects.
