Crimean realities in the travel notes of Aubrey de la Mothre

the article examines the peculiarities of transferring the realities of a "foreign" linguistic culture into their native language at a certain stage of historical development. The research material was travel notes by the French and British traveller Aubrey de la Mothre about his trip to the Crimean Peninsula in 1712 and published in English in 1724. The image of the peninsula created by Aubrey de la Mothre is characterised by mosaic, combining geographical, historical, ethnographic and subjective elements. The realities in his work are represented by toponyms, ethnonyms, onyms. The specifics of de la Mothre's transfer of Crimean realities are the use of Latin names of toponyms known to Western Europeans at that time and transliteration/transcription into English of realities of Turkic origin. Proper names of Crimean Tatar origin are the most difficult to identify due to the significant differences in the phonological and spelling bases of the English and Crimean Tatar languages. The results of the study can serve as a basis for further research on ways to reproduce Crimean realities in Western European languages in various historical periods, as well as a comparative historical analysis of the possibilities of transmitting "alien" realities in various linguistic cultures.
