Methods of translating metaphor in Douglas Adams’ novel “The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”

this article identifies and examines ways to reproduce metaphors in two Russian-language translations of Douglas Adams' novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", made by Vladimir I. Bakanov in 1995 and Yuri E. Arinovich in 2022. Based on domestic works on translation studies, a classification of ways to reproduce metaphors in Russian translation was identified. Based on this classification, the most frequently used ways of translating metaphors in a novel into Russian were identified, as well as the reasons for choosing certain translation solutions and their impact on maintaining the degree of expressiveness of the original text were analyzed. The research methodology is presented by a review of scientific works of Russian researchers on the issue under discussion, descriptive, comparative methods, as well as the method of contextual analysis. The study highlights the difficulties faced by translators in conveying the author's style and metaphorical images in works of fiction, and its results can be useful in the field of theory and practice of translation, the study of the author's style and other works by Douglas Adams, as well as in teaching translation disciplines.
