Abstract
The situation of the Czechs in the Austro-Hungarian Empire before 1914, their reaction to the outbreak of war, as well as participation in the First World War is considered. The assessment of the Czechs’ service in the Austro-Hungarian Army, their fighting qualities is given. The problem of the specifics of the service of Czech soldiers on different fronts, their participation in battles, both against Italy and against Russia, is analyzed. The Czech National liberation movement, its leaders and their views are analyzed. The influence of the war on the change in the position of Czech nationalists is considered.
