Resumo
The process of the French vocabulary replenishment with borrowings from Arabic in the 19th and 20th centuries was due to the development of the political situation. In 1830, the conquest of Algeria by France began. After the conquest of Algeria, the French first came into direct contact with the Arabic. Prior to this, borrowings were made through Italian, Spanish or Occitan languages. Borrowings that occurred in the second half of the 20th century have their own features, associated with the war that France was waging in Algeria, and with the termination of France’s protectorate over this former colony.
