Video essays as a hybrid of scientific and artistic styles

Abstract

the article presents the definition of the genre of essays, film essays and video essays, describes the functions and types of video essays, describes the stylistic features of the genre of video essays, shows examples of popular Russian and foreign video essays. The choice of the topic is explained by the fact that the genre of video essays is very popular in modern times, however, it is almost not represented in scientific works. In addition, most video essays are viewed from the point of view of cinema, rather than from the entire variety of the genre. The study analyzed the distinctive features and identified the features of artistic and scientific style in the genre of video essay, defined the concepts of "essay" and "video essay", analyzed the functions and types of "video essay", scientific and artistic features of the genre of "video essay". The analysis showed that the genre of video essays really has features of both artistic and scientific style. The video essay genre has great creative freedom, which is combined with the precision of academic methods of selecting materials.
