Abstract
In this article the phenomenon of multiculturalism is considered as a theoretical problem that combines various concepts and searches of answers that are solved by all polycultural societies. Here the cases of forming and genesis of the problem of multiculturalism in the context of the development of an American thought and social and historic backgrounds of the appearance of the phenomenon of multiculturalism and its separation into the individual field of research in the American and Russian societies. In the works both of American and Russian researchers the various interpretations of multiculturalism are considered. There is the understanding of the questions of relationship and interactions of cultures in the epicenter of the theoretical approaches for the research of the phenomenon of multiculturalism.
