Abstract
Basic features of European metaphysics are described by metaphor of the clock. Semiotics of time, according to the teachings of Nicholas of Cusa, has obtained certain duality - it is both linear and cyclical. On the one hand, according to Christian eschatology and modern theories, time is irreversible and one-directional, it is like an arrow directed towards eternity. On the other hand, there has been an ontological substitution of natural cycles: time, once it appeared on the clock-face of mechanical rotation, has obtained machine cyclicality.
