Aspectual meanings of progressive and durative aspect in the Old Uyghur language

Abstract

In Turkic studies of recent years, the question of the presence of the morphological category of aspectuality in Turkic languages is occasionally discussed. The dispute on this topic is traditionally led to the question of “the presence or absence of aspect in Turkic languages” and the interpretation of the meanings of some temporal forms of the Turkic verb. The study of aspectual meanings on the material of ancient languages, in particular, the Old Uyghur language, as one of the genetic ancestors of modern Turkic languages, can shed light on the semantic features of the forms of the Turkic verb, as well as provide confirmation or denial of the idea that the Old Uyghur verb can express aspectual meanings morphologically. The study of the features of aspectual meanings in Old Uyghur makes it possible to describe and broaden these meanings, as well as to identify the means that are used to express these meanings. The article deals with the aspectual meanings of progressive and durative and the means of their expression in the Old Uyghur language. In this study, the Old Uyghur language material is examined from the perspective of a functional-semantic approach. Among other things, descriptive and comparative research methods are used to analyse the material in order to identify synchronic and diachronic features of linguistic connections.The study of aspectuality as a functional-semantic field allows us to identify and describe in detail the means of expressing linear aspect meanings. In the course of the study, morphological means capable of marking the meanings of the linear aspect, namely the middle stage of the process were found. The analysis revealed that the progressive and durative aspects are expressed with analytic combinations in which the first component is the adverbial form of the verb and the second is the auxiliary verb.
