On the reaction of nido-carborane with thiourea

A reaction of the protonated form of 7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborate anion 7,8-C₂B₉H₁₃ with thiourea leads to the formation of a mixture of 9- and 10-thiuronium derivatives, the alkaline hydrolysis of which gives a mixture of the corresponding mercapto derivatives of nido-carborane. The alkylation of the latter with benzyl bromide led to a mixture of dibenzylsulfonium derivatives 9-Bn₂S-7,8-C₂B₉H₁₁ and 10-Bn₂S-7,8-C₂B₉H₁₁, which were separated by column chromatography on silica.
