Abstract
Self-harm behavior in women, aged 13-29, with borderline personality disorder is described and analyzed. It is shown that self-harm behavior is not equivalent to the suicidal one and presents complicated phenomenon that cannot be explained in simplified terms as demonstrative or suicidal ones. Psychological content and the dynamic of self-mutilation correspond to the same peculiarities of other process addictions. They reflect, in particular, a desire to escape from the dread of annihilation and psychic fragmentation through the experience of physical pain. Diffuse non-cohesive identity is established as the core sign of the observed disorder. The role of dysfunctional family, distancing mother, addictive father and child abuse is emphasized.
