Russian Journal of Physiology (p-ISSN 0869-8139, e-ISSN 2658-655X) is issued monthly and publishes the works in all fields of physiology and physiological aspects of related sciences — zoology, anatomy, histology, embryology, molecular biology, biochemistry. Articles can be written and published in Russian or English.
We accept for publication:
1) Research Papers: completed original (not previously published) experimental studies in all areas of physiology illustrating new physiological principles or mechanisms.
2) Techniques for Physiology: works describing new techniques for physiological studies and the ways of their application in physiology and related sciences. The papers must provide a significant advance in technology or a radical new technique that allows investigators to ask deeper questions about physiology.
3) Topical Reviews. The Journal accepts reviews and mini-reviews on the most topical problems of physiology and related sciences. The reviews are intended to be succinct and direct, easy to read and attractively presented with explanatory diagrams and summary figures. The Journal is willing to consider proposals for Topical Reviews from interested authors.
The papers are submitted in the electronic form on the website:
https://rusjphysiol.org/index.php/rusjphysiol/submission/wizard
The journal encourages and appeals to the authors to follow the ARRIVE guidelines for animal research while writing the paper. The full text of these guidelines can be found on the website:
httрs://www.nс3rs.org.uk/arrive-guidelines or
While publishing the results obtained in humans, including the studies of the biological materials or data that allows for the identification of the person from whom they were obtained, authors must follow the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki, which must be indicated in the paper.
The manuscript should be structured as follows:
1) Title page:
Paper title (Effect of glutamate…)
Authors Names (I.I. Ivanov,1 P.P. Petrov,2 S.S. Sidorov1,2*)
Authors affiliations (Institute, City, Country)
1 Pavlov Institute of Physiology, Saint Petersburg, Russia
2 Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry, Saint Petersburg, Russia
* Email of the author for the correspondence
Abstract (200-250 words). The abstract must reflect the main content of the paper and follow the logic of the description of the results presented in it. The abstract can be one unstructured paragraph or can be divided into the same sections as the paper (introduction, methods, results, discussion).
Keywords (no more than 7 words or word groups in the singular).
2) The text of the paper
The text of the experimental papers must be divided into the following sections: Introduction (without a dedicated heading), Methods, Results, Discussion (combined «Results and Discussion» section is accepted if the size of the discussion section is small), References.
The short background with the necessary review of similar or related papers is summarized in the Introduction. An extensive historical review is not appropriate. A clearly stated goal and objectives of the study are expected. The recommended volume is under 500 words.
Methods must be described concisely, but in enough detail to make the reproduction of the experiments possible. The information about the animals that were used in the experiments, the materials, chemicals, and devices with the manufacturers and country of origin specified must be presented in this section. The statistical methods that were used in the analysis of the results must be specified.
If the experiments were performed on animals, the compliance with the bioethical norms must be stated: «This study was performed in accordance with the principles of the Basel Declaration and the recommendations of the [name of the bioethical committee of the Organization].» The results of the works that do not comply with the bioethical principles will not be accepted for consideration.
The Results must provide a full understanding of the obtained data and include the materials that characterize its significance. This section must be illustrated with the images and/or tables; the experiments that do not need to be documented are described in the text. The expanded discussion of the results should not be provided here; the explanation of the causal connections between the following experiments will suffice. The authors should avoid duplicating data in the text, tables, and figures. All results must undergo the statistical analysis, the number of the observations, mean values and their variation, the statistical methods used should be specified. The figures and the tables can be inserted directly into the corresponding parts of the manuscript for easier review process.
The Discussion section contains the interpretation of the results, the explanation of the physiological significance of the revealed mechanisms. It is preferable to reference other recent works in the discussion of the results. The main results may be illustrated with a scheme.
Funding sources. Authors must indicate all sources of funding, including grant numbers. If authors have not received funding, this must be stated.
Acknowledgments. Acknowledgments should be the minimum consistent with courtesy. The wording of acknowledgments of scientific assistance or advice must have been seen and approved by the persons concerned. This section should not include details of funding.
References
The journal uses the sequential numbering of the references, i.e., the numerical order of the referenced source is specified in the text in the brackets, which corresponds to the number of the source in the bibliography. The style file for Mendeley can be downloaded from the website at this link.

Additionally, referencing of the sources unavailable for international readers must be minimized. Best not to include the references to dissertations, conference abstracts and unpublished works in the bibliography.
Figures and tables
The images and tables may be included in the manuscript at the review stage, but the resulting file size must not exceed 5 MB. It is recommended to upload the image files separately for high-quality printing. The file names must correspond with the order of the images in the text (Fig1.tif). TIFF and JPEG formats are recommended for raster image files; in this case, the resolution of tonal and combined illustrations must be at least 300 dpi, and for line graphics — 600 dpi.
Excessively small labels (letters, numbers, and symbols) and thin lines should be avoided.
The graphs must include all labels (axes labels, units of measurement, curve labels, etc.). All axes labels should be capitalized, the unit of measurement separated with the comma and not parenthesis (for example, Response amplitude, mV). Arial font is preferable for all legends. The diagrams should not contain the grid lines. Mean values should be given with the error margins.
If the image is composite (includes several panels), then each of them should be labeled with a capital letter (a, b, c…). The composite image should be provided as a single file.
Each image must have a number, a short name, and a caption.
The editorial team recommends using colored illustrations only when it is necessary to convey the information. The necessary colored images are published free of charge.
Each table must have a number, a title, and separate labels for the columns. The tables must be prepared using Word editing tools. They must not be inserted as images.
If the authors use any illustrations or tables from the other publications (including their other works) in their manuscript, they must be referenced, and the authors must ask the publishers of those publications for the reprinting permission and include it in submission.
Please provide only the necessary amount of non-zero digits for the results (usually 2 or 3 decimal digits depending on the error margins; the number of the digits for the mean and the error must be the same):
incorrect: 5.437 ± 0.502; correct: 5.4 ± 0.5;
incorrect: 3523.1 ± 365.7 ms; correct: 3.5 ± 0.4 s
incorrect: 0.12345 ± 0.01274; correct: 0.123 ± 0.013
Please specify the probability level based on these rules:
For 0.01 ≤ p ≤ 1.00 - specify p to the nearest hundredth (p > 0.05; p < 0.05 are acceptable);
For 0.001 ≤ p < 0.01 - write p < 0.01;
For any p < 0.001 - write p < 0.001;
For example. p = 0.0312 - write p = 0.03;
p = 0.1372 - write p = 0.14;
p = 0.0014782 - write p < 0.01;
p = 0.0000478 - write p < 0.001.

Manuscript submission and the review procedure
- The manuscripts are submitted in the electronic form on the website https://rusjphysiol.org/index.php/rusjphysiol/submission/wizard
- When submitting the paper, the authors must confirm that the material was not previously published and that it was not submitted for review in another journal.
- The author may recommend (or reject) several potential reviewers for their paper in the commentary for the editor. (The rejected reviewers will not be assigned for review of the paper, but the final choice of the reviewers is left to the editor).
- The author must upload the manuscript file, the image files for the illustrations (if present), and the scan of the license agreement signed by all authors.
- The corresponding author must fill all the primary information about the paper and all co-authors and provide their current e-mails. All stages of the review will be visible to the authors in their accounts.
- Upon submission of the manuscript, the author will be automatically notified by email that the paper was submitted for review. After that, the editorial staff member will check if the paper meets the technical and bioethical requirements. The manuscripts that do not meet those requirements are returned to authors without review.
- The registered manuscript will be assigned for review to at least two reviewers.
- The reviewers' commentaries and the editorial decision regarding the paper will be sent to the author by email. Therefore it is important to specify the email that is regularly checked by the author. The reviewers' commentaries are also available on the website in the author's account.
- The deadline for major revision of the paper is 3 months, for minor revision — 1 month. The authors may ask the editor to delay the deadline. The replies to the reviewers and the revised version of the paper are submitted on the website. If the authors do not reply until the specified deadline, the paper is considered to be retracted by the authors.
- The authors are immediately notified about the acceptance (or rejection) of the paper for publication via email.
