Sergei Aleksandrovich Tokarev and Contemporary Yakut Studies

Borisov A.

Resumo

The article examines the contribution of Sergei Tokarev, a prominent Soviet ethnographer, to the field of Yakut studies. It discusses the part he played in the development of historical and ethnographic thought in Yakutia, taking various academic discussions and debates as case studies, and pays particular attention to his views on ethnic origins and social structure of the Yakut in the 17th century. I attempt to look at Tokarev's contributions against the backdrop of the political climate that developed in academia in the 1930s–70s, and show the role of Yakut studies in his scholarly career, touching on twists and turns of his relationships with leading scholars of Yakutia, such as G.V. Ksenofontov, G.P. Basharin, A.P. Okladnikov, Z.V. Gogolev, and others. I argue that the significance and relevance of Tokarev's legacy for contemporary research continue to grow. The difficulties and contradictions that were arising during the development of Yakut studies did not affect the academic objectivity and high professionalism of the scholar. The scrupulous use of historical and ethnographic methods allowed him to develop his own theoretical views on the patterns of ethnic and cultural processes among the Yakuts, as well as on the development of their social organization and religious beliefs.

A Sociological Theory of Shamanism by S.A. Tokarev and Shamanism of Indigenous Peoples of the Far East

Solomonova N.

Resumo

The article discusses theoretical issues in the sociological theory of shamanism and its manifestations in the shamanism of indigenous peoples of the Far East. The work done by the prominent Soviet ethnographer Sergei Tokarev is usually considered classic in the development of sociological theory of shamanism in Russian scholarship. Drawing on comparative historical and functionalist research methods, he developed the basic principles of morphological classification of religion and singled out shamanism. This article adds phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches to comparative historical research methods in the study of shamanism of Far Eastern peoples. Tokarev’s sociological theory of shamanism touched on the main principles of shaman’s formation and self-definition, the types of shamanism, its origins and roots, the hereditary nature of shamanic disease, the social essence of ecstasy, demonology, and stages of the evolution of shamanism. Newer concepts of shamanism built upon it, formulating novel ideas in the fields of anthropology, psychology, philosophy, and cultural studies. The data on shamanism examined in this article confirm the principal arguments of theoreticians dealing with research on shamanism and help us understand the essence of different types of shamanism, its major varieties and functions, as well as specificities of therapeutic, commemorative, and other shamanic rituals. The article further surveys valuable field materials of the late 20th-century scholars, demonstrating that shamanic rituals are an important part of the cultural legacy of Far Eastern indigenous peoples.

Ethnography of I.I. Zheleznov's "Tales of the Ural Cossacks"

Golikova S.

Resumo

"Tales of the Ural Cossacks" is a set consisting of fourteen essays that resulted from the writer and belletrist I.I. Zheleznov's trip in 1858 as a collector to the area of deployment of the Ural Cossack Army, where he developed an idea to reflect on his field experience. A structural analysis of the essays shows that they imitate ethnographic interviews in which the author-collector communicates with informants: a storyteller from whom he records songs and legends, and a narrator whom he deliberately questions about issues related to popular religiosity. The process of interviewing itself becomes an object of reflection for the writer. The stages of "fieldwork" identified by him — presenting himself to the informants, establishing relationships with them, overcoming communication barriers, and conducting interviews or surveys — remain relevant today. Strategies, principles, techniques, and methods used by I.I. Zheleznov during his work in the field later took root in various intellectual practices. An analysis of the "Tales of the Ural Cossacks" suggests that at that time there were more conscious, diverse, and complex paths towards shaping ethnographic writing than has traditionally been assumed.

Image of Perception of the Chinese in Maksimov's Book "In the East: A Trip to Amur: Travel Notes and Memoirs", 1860–61

Zabiyako A.

Resumo

The article presents a study of the way Chinese people are perceived in S.V. Maksimov's book "In the East: A Trip to Amur: Travel Notes and Memoirs", which was one of the first writings of the kind produced by writers of the Russian Far East. I highlight the peculiarities of the narrative strategy of the writer-ethnographer, focusing on the use of two narrating instances in creating an image of perception – a direct observer-onlooker and a statesman-minded researcher who knows the historical and political situation. Everyday observations on the life of the Chinese population of a border town by and large cause the feeling of aversion in the "observer-onlooker" whose philistine mind tends to absolute aspects such as bribery as the basis of the management system and business relations, the pursuit of sensual pleasures, or the spharitism and disposition to theft. At the same time, the statesman-minded researcher, who is keen on searching for universal of human communication, discovers the most important (in his opinion) feature of the national character of the Chinese: patriotism as love and devotion to their native land, native culture, and their people. Maksimov, who juxtaposes patriotism to the tendency of Russians abroad to melt in a foreign culture, implicitly asserts love for the native land and native culture and history as the main condition for understanding and inculcating the sense of "nationality"; that is, he sees it as the basis of ethnic identity and ethnicity capable of influencing the foreign and domestic policies of Russians in their communication with the Chinese. I argue that Maksimov's travel notes are valuable not only as a purely ethnographic source for academic research on historical realities of the mid-19th century and Russian-Chinese interaction and relationships, but also as a literary genre that set a trend in the formation of a distinctive artistic-ethnographic style in the writings of later authors of Russia's Far Eastern frontier, such as V.K. Arsenyev, N.A. Baykov, P.V. Shkurkin, and V. Marta.

Tight Belt for Lefty: A Forgotten Element of the Road Tradition of Russia

Korshunkov V.

Resumo

This paper examines one of the elements of the so-called road tradition of Russia. Road tradition is a combination of material and spiritual aspects of an overland travel (both on foot and by horse-drawn transport). In the climate of northern Eurasia and under the socio-economic conditions inherent in the Russian state in the 18th–19th centuries, the transport routes, which were unusually long, could not be well equipped. When driving fast on bad roads, people suffered very much: painful concussions of the body’s internal organs and even motion sickness (nausea) occurred. In the story “Lefty” by Nikolai Leskov, such a travel attribute as the special tight belt is mentioned. By analyzing other and more reliable narrative sources, it turns out that Russian travelers really used this method to protect themselves from unpleasant sensations during a long journey. Contemporary medical research also confirms that, for example, wearing a wide, tight belt is recommended when swaying at sea. Consequently, the memory of various elements of the road tradition has well preserved in fiction. Therefore, fiction is a specific source, but quite suitable for ethnographic, historical, and anthropological reconstructions.

Road as a Social Space: An Attempt at Reconstruction Through Twentieth-Century Soviet and Post-Soviet Travel Prose

Shchepanskaia T.

Resumo

In this essay, I attempt to examine travel prose of Russian-language authors of the 20th century – fictional and documentary descriptions of travels across the territory of the European part of Russia – as sources for reconstructing the social space of the road. The structure of the positions of those interacting in this space is defined as dependent on the process of movement, as well as the means of transportation or their absence. I further consider the social space of the road in the perspective of intersections with external segments of social space through the simultaneous definition of communicants in the road and external systems of statuses.

Reader's Space: Tsvetaeva’s Bonfires in the Light of the Cultural Scene Concept

Levochskiy S., Levochskaia E.

Resumo

The article examines Tsvetaeva’s Bonfires, a contemporary urban ritual of reading the poet’s poems, singing songs, and presenting new research, an essential part of which is live or symbolic fire. Tsvetaeva’s Bonfires emerged in the 1980s and are held in places most often associated with the biographies of Marina or Anastasia Tsvetaeva. Observations allow us to conclude that, despite the same name, these events are organized differently in different cities. We describe the phenomenon of bonfires through the concept of a cultural scene, developed by W. Straw and A. Bennet, and adapted to Russian realities by E. Omelchenko. This approach allows us to consider the emotional content of group practices of reading poetry, taking into account a specific place of gatherings: thus, we can make the requirement of “sincerity” or a symbolic event linking certain emotions and the space of the gathering the object of analysis (the dove is interpreted as the soul of Marina Tsvetaeva, and the good weather as the blessing of her sister Anastasia). As a cultural scene, Tsvetaeva’s Bonfire reproduces implicit rules and meanings, allowing participants to immerse themselves in authentic experiences, share common values, while preserving the individual status of their experience.

Overcoming Boundaries: Life and Work of Nikolai Aboimov

Sirina A.

Resumo

The subject of the article is the work of the Russian writer and blogger living in the Far East – the former hunter-reindeer herder Nikolai Iosifovich Aboimov. The case of Nikolai Aboimov's entering the Evenki culture deserves attention as an example of cultural contact without conflict. He managed to overcome cultural and mental borders between the two cultures due to a long-term lived experience shared with the Evenki. He gained from them deep first-hand knowledge about their unique culture and expressed it in his work. A percipient and observant person as all hunters are, he memorized and recorded his experience in diaries and later transferred it into literary form and videos. This article employs methods and approaches both of ethnology and of literary criticism, attempting to combine biographical analysis and content analysis of various sources such as video blogs and works of art, as well as drawing on fieldwork, interviews, and museum research. I examine the major motives in the literary work of Nikolai Aboimov – namely, those of taiga, education/self-education, play/creativity, and will to live and overcome difficulties. In fact, Aboimov himself used a phenomenological approach in understanding reality, which helped him describe the essence of lived situations. His stories – documentarily accurate miniature sketches of everyday life in the taiga – feature some fifty characters, mainly Evenki and some other people, as well as dogs, reindeer, wild animals and birds. These stories tell us about hunting and reindeer herding, material culture, beliefs, Evenki’s knowledge and pedagogy, as well as collaboration with geologists. I argue that Aboimov’s stories and videos should be seen as valuable and reliable ethnographic sources conveying information about the Bomnak Evenki; furthermore, they provide answers to questions about the ways of overcoming cultural boundaries while maintaining own identity.

Institutions of Conscience: Beliefs and Experience in the Procedure of Substituting Military Service with Alternative Service

Shevchenko N.

Resumo

The article considers the role of the concept of conscience in the bureaucratic mechanisms of the institution of alternative civilian service in contemporary Russia. The field research was conducted in a St. Petersburg human rights organization in 2020–2024. The materials were methodological recommendations of human rights defenders, ego-documents of NCO clients, including statements with stated beliefs, and records of recruitment commissions. The analysis made it possible to describe the repertoire of means of ensuring the state’s access to the conscience of the conscript and to see how beliefs become an element of citizen-state communication and part of the formal procedure. Drawing on critical studies of human rights and the modern subject, I show how global ethical and legal doctrine is embodied in the actual work of the institution of military registration. The key thesis of the article is that the institutionalization of conscience inevitably leads to the delegation of the need to speak out on behalf of the subject to other people and institutions and the distribution of responsibility and authority among them.

Academic Hypotheses on the Ethnic Origins of the Armenians

Shaginyan A.

Resumo

Discussions on the ethnic origins of Armenians in scientific publications do not cease. As a rule, the historians and ethnographers of the Ancient Middle East dispute two popular theories. The first of them is “autochthonous” (“Ḫayaša hypothesis”), which has been widely supported by the academic circles within the Republic of Armenia since Soviet times. The second is “migration-mixed” (“Ḫatti hypothesis”), to which many Russian and Western specialists continue to appeal. Due to the lack of consensus, the author of this article set out to analyze the history and main provisions of both scientific theories. In addition, he extracted from the multilingual cuneiform monuments of the Assyrian, Achaemenid, Babylonian, Urartian, Hittite, and Sumero-Akkadian cultures, Luwian hieroglyphics, as well as from the books of the Old Testament and ancient Greek and ancient Armenian literature all the materials that may be related to the ethnic and linguistic elements that took part in the long process of ethnogenesis of the Armenians.
