New species of pelagic eelpouts of the genus Melanostigma (Zoarcidae) from Western Antarctica

Balushkin A., Moganova M.

摘要

A new species, Melanostigma olgae sp. n., is described from the Southern Ocean. The type series was obtained along the South Sandwich Islands (Scotia Sea, Western Antarctic) at the depths of 800−850 m. The new species differs from the other representatives of Melanostigma genus by the original combination of the features of the seismosensory system, axial skeleton, and coloration. The homologization of the structural elements (senses) of the head canals of the lateral line has been done for the first time for the Melanostigma. Morphology of M. olgae allows considering this species as the most evolutionary advanced within the representatives of this genus inhabiting the Southern Ocean. The key of the Antarctic species of the genus Melanostigma is provided.

Catching of Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides (Pleuronectidae) on the shelf edge of the Laptev and East Siberian Seas

Chernova N.

摘要

The first capture of the Greenland (or Black) halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides in the Arctic Ocean on the border with the East Siberian Sea (79°03′–79°08′ N 139°59′–141°16′ E, 259–277 m) and the repeated findings of the species in the Laptev Sea (78°03′–78°04′ N 132°56′–133°04′ E, 307 m; 78°33′–78°35′ N 138°44′–138°48′ E, 125 m) are reported. Fish (79 specimens with the length of 15.0–44.5 cm) were caught during four bottom trawlings on the edge of the continental shelf of the two seas in the transformed waters of Atlantic origin, as evidenced by the discovery of the indicator species of these waters—the Glacier lanternfish Benthosema glaciale (Myctophidae)—in one of the stomachs of halibut. The other captures of Greenland halibut in the Arctic were also reviewed.

Biological features of common fish species in Olyutorsky-Navarin region and the adjacent areas of the Bering Sea: 3. Righteye flounders (Pleuronectidae)

Datsky A., Maznikova O.

摘要

Biological features of the seven abundant commercial species—the Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis, the Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides, the Alaska plaice Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus, the northern rock sole Lepidopsetta polyxystra, the yellowfin sole Limanda aspera, the flathead sole Hippoglossoides elassodon, and the Bering flounder H. robustus (Pleuronectidae)—have been studied for a 20-year period (1995−2015). These species are present in the northwestern Bering Sea in the summer–autumn season; they form the gatherings in Olyutorsky-Navarin region. The size-weight spectra of the fish caught by different fishing gear has been analyzed, the peculiarities of the linear growth and the weight gain, as well as the spawning period and scale and the spawning conditions, have been described. The largest halibut specimens have been registered in the bottom setlines and gill nets, while flounders were in snurrevad catches; the smallest specimens have been observed in trawl catches. The abundant year-class in most of the studied species is seen well on the long-term plots of the fish size spectra and is tracked by the decrease of their biological parameters. The species that demand vast growing grounds (Pacific halibut, Alaska plaice, northern rock sole, and yellowfin sole) are characterized by a smaller average body size of the fish sampled in the coastal waters due to the prevalence of the young specimens in this area.

Biology of round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum (Coregonidae) of the Anadyr River

Shestakov A.

摘要

The recent state of the population of round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum from the Anadyr River is described. Age composition of the catches of round whitefish remained almost without changes over the 35-year observation period. During this period, the proportion of large fishes (>380 mm in body length) slightly decreased, and the average body length of sexually mature individuals had become smaller. Possible reasons of interannual changes of the size-age composition of the catches and growth rate of the fish are discussed. A main factor determining growth variation of the fish is the abundance of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta that migrated. The abundance of the round whitefish of the Anadyr River remains at a stable level (except the area of Markovo village) over a long time, and this population is hardly exploited.

On the Dolly Varden’s Salvelinus malma (Salmonidae) biology in Kamchatkan spawning rivers of the volcanic areas

Esin E.

摘要

Anadromous and stream resident Dolly Varden S. malma were compared in the contaminated and reference rivers across Kamchatka region. Anadromous Dolly Varden’s fry from the polluted and clean rivers were correspondently different by reduced growth rate and narrow length variability. It was observed that juveniles prefer to migrate from the polluted river sections; only seldom fry reaches the smoltification stage at the contaminated sites. The volcanogenic environmental pollution causes paedomorphosis and accelerated sexual maturation in the landlocked brook-dwelling populations. Either the growth rate or the length variability within the age groups were not reduced during the maturation period in the landlocked groups comparing with fish from reference streams. However the weakened individuals with an extremely low body weight were observed among the landlocked fish during maturing. Gonadosomatic index and relative fecundity were comparable for fish from polluted and clean rivers, though relatively high fecundity for the first group was attained by the oocytes size decreasing. Skin cover was damaged; Clark’s condition index and muscle fatness were reduced while liver size was enlarged in either landlocked or anadromous fishes from the polluted water-courses.

Biological characteristics of smolts of European river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis from the Chernaya River basin (Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea)

Kucheryaviy A., Tsimbalov I., Nazarov D., Zvezdin A., Pavlov D.

摘要

Smolts of European river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis from the Chernaya River basin are described. Expansion of variation limits is suggested on the basis of comparative analysis of taxonomically significant characters of this population and the species area. Structure of gonads and intestine of specimens preparing themselves for the feeing phase of their life cycle is described and some changes during the feeding phase are reconstructed. The scheme of analysis and description of smolts is suggested, the last may be applied to other lamprey species. The term “smolt” is rightfully used for juvenile anadromous lampreys making downstream migration. Biology of parasitic nonanadromous species of lampreys during the feeding phase (juvenile postmetamorphic phase) differs from biology of smolts.

Efficiency of DNA barcoding for phylogenetic analysis and species identification in flying fish (Exocoetidae)

Gordeeva N., Shakhovskoi I.

摘要

The article reports DNA barcoding (sequencing of the cox 1 mitochondrial gene fragment) of five South Atlantic flying fish species belonging to family Exocoetidae together with the results of the comparative analysis of cox 1 variability in the Exocoetidae and its closely related family Hemiramphidae. It has been demonstrated that DNA barcoding can be used as an extra tool for species identification and phylogenetic analysis in flying fish, since species identification accuracy using the cox 1 gene sequence proved to be 88%, or 78% when intraspecies variability level is taken into account. We have confirmed monophyletic origin of certain species, genera, and subfamilies of flying fish except for the genus Cheilopogon, which was represented on the phylogenetic tree by three paraphyletic clades. One of them shows close relationship to the genus Cypselurus, while another encompasses Hirundichthys genus species. The Exocoetidae is characterized by much lower overall genetic divergence level compared to the Hemiramphidae (average intraspecies differences: 10.2 ± 0.4% vs. 18.1 ± 0.8%; average intrageneric differences: 13.3 ± 1.1% vs. 21.3 ± 1.8%), which may indicate that the former group is relatively young in terms of evolution. No intraspecies differentiation was observed for Exocoetus obtusirostrus across a significant geographic distance (>3000 km). Phylogenetic reconstructions based on the variability of conservative (cox 1 mtDNA) and more variable regions of mitochondrial and nuclear genomes and on the adaptive morphological traits associated with gliding flight development were shown to coincide to a large extent.

Genetic diversity of sharpnose mullet Liza saliens introduced in southern Caspian Sea in comparison with one native Aegean Sea population

Imsiridou A., Naderi L., Shabani A.

摘要

Sharpnose mullet, Liza saliens (Risso, 1810) is one of the valuable species in Caspian shoreline and it was first introduced to Caspian Sea from Black Sea between 1930 and 1934. In the present study, we used six microsatellite markers to obtain genetic information for L. saliens from four localities of southern Caspian Sea and for one native population from Greece coastline (northern Aegean Sea). Results showed lower number of alleles (Na = 5.7–6) and higher observed heterozygosity (Ho = 0.74–0.83) in Caspian Sea samples, related to the native Aegean population (Na = 8, Ho = 0.68). Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg expectations were detected in 19 out of 28 tests. Low genetic differentiation (provided Fst values) among samples was detected, but Behshahr sample was significantly differentiated from all the others. The UPGMA tree revealed three major clusters: the Behshahr sample and Greek population were clustered in two different clades, and the remaining three samples formed another cluster. The low genetic variation and spatial differentiation among Caspian Sea samples may be justified by the recent establishment.

Mechanisms of regulation of erythrocyte volume in common carp Cyprinus carpio (Cyprinidae) at increase in the osmotic concentration of blood plasma within the zone of critical water salinity

Martemyanov V.

摘要

In common carp Cyprinus carpio, acclimated to NaCl content in water of 0–6 g/L, the concentration of sodium in blood plasma was relatively constant (130.8 ± 0.7 mM/L). In the fish acclimated to 6−12 g/L NaCl, which corresponds to critical water salinity, plasma sodium content rose to the maximal value of 205.6 ± 1.3 mM/L. Within the interval of water salinity of 0–6 g/L NaCl, the content of potassium in erythrocytes exhibits a trend to gradual decrease from 104.8 ± 1.6 mM/L to 96 ± 1.5 mM/L. In the zone of critical salinity, potassium content increases exponentially to 130.3 ± 2.9 mM/L. The erythrocytes adapted to the increase in osmotic concentration of plasma by accumulation of potassium ions. According to published data on the studies in vitro, the erythrocytes adapt to hypertonic solutions by means of increase in intracellular sodium concentration. Possible reasons for discrepancy between the results of in vivo and in vitro studies are discussed in the present paper.

Fish Assemblages Survey Technique (Fast) in Tunisian marine waters (Central Mediterranean)

Ghanem R., Soussi J.

摘要

Following the heightened damage of marine ecosystems, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been created for the protection and the conservation of species and habitats. However, their implementation requires accurate data availability used by decision makers to enable their boundaries and zoning. Thus, for this purpose of management, a new method of fish assemblages monitoring (FAST—Fish Assemblages Survey Technique) has been tested in Tunisian marine waters. FAST survey was applied between 2011 and 2012 in three areas with various degrees of geomorphological features and human pressures; the future Marine Protected Area of Cap Serrat–Cap Negro and two coastal areas of Hammamet and Bizerte. The depths of the surveyed 11 stations are between 0 and 20 m. The FAST index is calculated seasonally for targeted species according to their presence / absence, and depending on two size classes. In terms of diversity and species richness, differences between sites were observed and results show that FAST method appears to be relevant, easy to implement and accurately reflects the environmental status of the study site. The advantages and shortcomings of this method were discussed.

Captures of Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis (Pleuronectidae) in Anadyr estuary of the Bering Sea

Batanov R., Chikilev V., Mitenkova L.

摘要

Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis is registered in the Anadyr estuary (Bering Sea basin) for the first time: 20 specimens, 18.5–160.5 cm in length, were caught by trawl and longline within the sea portion of the Anadyr River estuary in August 2010 and September 2015 in highly desalted (23.5‰ on average) and heated (6.5°С) water at a depth of 14–30 meters. Halibut is suggested to form feeding groups within the Anadyr Estuary. An opportunity for organized fishing in this region is discussed.

New record of the golden grouper Saloptia powelli (Perciformes: Serranidae) from North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Burhanuddin A., Hardianty S., Tassakka A., Cahyani N., Tucker S.

摘要

One specimen (300 mm in standard length) of Saloptia powelli, belonging to the family Serranidae, was newly collected in a local fish market in Manado, North Sulawesi, constituting a new record for the species in the Indonesian archipelago. This species was diagnosed by the following morphological traits: dorsal rays VIII—11, anal rays III—8, well-defined opercular spines, pelvic fins below pectoral fins, caudal fin emarginate, mouth moderate in size, supplemental maxillary present, fine teeth in irregular rows on vomer and palatines. Head, body, and fins yellow in color. We suggest “kerapu emas”, a translation of its existing common name “golden grouper”, for the Indonesian species names.
