Molecular Basis of Cardioprotection in Ischemic Heart Disease

The review addresses the mechanisms of adaptation of cardiomyocytes to hypoxia and ischemia and analyzes the signaling mechanisms responsible for expression of metabolic genes and the formation of tolerance to hypoxia and ischemia with a special focus on the role of HIF-1α, succinate, and ATP-dependent K⁺-channels (K_ATP-channels) in the regulation of adaptive responses of cardiomyocytes during myocardial ischemia.
