Abstract
Until the end of the 18th century, there was no qualified obstetric care in Kazan. The birth was taken at home in unsanitary conditions by midwives who had no education. The help of midwives (with a special education) was used for the most part by the intellectual circles of the urban and rural population; women of the poor classes turned exclusively to the services of ignorant midwives
