Tema da Revista

The scientific peer-reviewed journal "Geomorfologiya I Paleogeografiya" (Geomorphology and Paleogeography; until 2023 - "Geomorfologiya") is the only specialized journal in Russia devoted to the study of the Earth's landforms and the history of the natural environment in the Quaternary. Since 1970 it is published regularly 4 times a year and in 2020 celebrated its half-century anniversary. Since 2021, the journal has been published in a larger volume and broader format than in previous years. Since 2023, there has been an expansion of the journal's subject matter and change of the journal title.

"Geomorfologiya I Paleogeografiya" is supposed to contribute to the development of general theoretical, methodological and applied problems of geomorphology and Quaternary science. The journal is intended to present research aimed at understanding the origin, development history, formation mechanisms and modern dynamics of land surface processes and landforms, changes of vegetation, soils, climate and other components of the natural environment on historical and geological (within the Quaternary period) time scales. The journal accepts two types of papers - research (investigating specific issues with new findings) and review (summaries of fairly large problems based on a review of published literature). The journal does not publish chronicles, book reviews, biographical sketches, anniversary notes or obituaries.

The journal covers fundamental and applied issues in the following thematic areas:

  • theory, methods and technologies of modern and paleorelief research (including geomorphological mapping, GIS-technologies, remote sensing data application; mathematical spatial and dynamic modelling, quantitative measurements of relief-forming processes, obtaining and interpretation of geochronological data, ancient landform reconstruction);
  • regional studies of modern and paleorelief (including tectonic, volcanic, seismogenic, fluvial, gravitational, glacial, periglacial, permafrost, karst, arid and aeolian, coastal and marine, biogenic and anthropogenic relief, weathering forms, geomorphological hazard and risk, relic relief);
  • palaeogeographic reconstructions (including climate, vegetation, soil cover of the past at the scale from historical epoch to the glacial-interglacial climatic cycles), palaeohydrology of rivers and lakes, paleooceanology, loess-soil formation, etc.);
  • natural factors of human life from Paleolithic to Modern time, geoarchaeology (geomorphological and paleogeographical methods in the study of archaeological sites, reconstruction of local natural environment of specific sites).

Very welcome are interdisciplinary articles aimed at revealing links of relief and relief-forming processes with soil formation, hydrological processes, neotectonics, quaternary geology, landscape-geochemical conditions, living conditions of ancient man, paleo- and modern ecological situation.

Publishing Ethics

The editors of the journal adhere to the rules as stated below.

The papers submitted should satisfy the following requirements:

  • to fall within the scope of the journal;
  • to present new data and results of research not published previously;
  • to be supplemented with the complete list of the used sources, as well as with information on the financial support, if any;
  • not include plagiarism and false information;
  • conform to the existing standards of the scientific paper preparation.

The authors of papers:

  • confirm the participation of each of them in the research performed, as well as authenticity and reliability of the data presented;
  • take part in finalizing the paper and, if necessary, advance argumented objections or correct mistakes.

The reviewers:

  • respect the authors’ point of view;
  • give an unbiased assessment of papers and their compliance with the scope of the journal, and verify that the name of the paper and the abstract comply with its contents;
  • find out works of importance similar in the subject to the reviewed paper, though not mentioned by the authors;
  • in case of conflict of interests or other reasons that prevent the reviewer from giving an objective assessment of the paper, he should promptly inform the editors so that they could find another reviewer;
  • maintain strict confidentiality in reviewing.

Editors and members of the editorial board:

  • are aware of their responsibility for the decision whether the submitted paper is accepted or rejected;
  • accept the articles that conform to all the selection criteria and fall within the scope of our journal;
  • reserve the right to reduce and to edit the text of articles.
  • when rejecting a paper, are guided by objective standards as stated below;
  • make sure there is no conflict of interests;
  • keep the reviewers anonymous.

The editors are responsible for publishing rebuttal or corrections in case of mistakes having been found.

Criteria for paper selection

The scope of the journal includes such topics as geomorphology of land, sea shores and bottom, paleogeomorphology, as well as results of applied research usable in the national economy; an appropriate attention is paid to the application of new methods in the geomorphology. Articles on neotectonics and paleogeography are accepted only if their subject has a direct bearing to the geomorphology. The journal publishes also critical reviews of new scientific works on the above-stated subjects, as well as current information on the scientific conferences and congresses.

We welcome discussions if they are of general scientific, and not personal, interest. The journal does not print an opinion of one author on the other’s competence and qualification, but only purely scientific comments on his work.

The submitted papers should be reporting essential results of completed and not published previously research.

All the papers coming to the editorial office of «Geomorphology” are necessarily subject to anonymous reviewing both by members of the editorial board and invited reviewers (including foreign scientists) – specialists in the field of geomorphology the paper deals with. After the paper had obtained an approval of the reviewers and passed scientific and literary editing, it is discussed at the meeting of the editorial board and is finally accepted for publication.

In case the reviewers had essential critical comments, the paper is sent to the author for making the necessary corrections and complements and then sent to the reviewers once again. If the author and the reviewers cannot come to an agreement about the manuscript, the editors may seek for an opinion of an independent expert. Final decision on whether the paper should be accepted or rejected is made by the editorial board in accordance with the reviewers’ recommendations. In case of conflict situation, the final decision on whether or not the paper is to be published is made by the chief editor

Disclosure and Conflict of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.

Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
