Representatives of the most ancient Permian Inoceramus-like bivalves, dominants of later (Middle and Early Permian) benthic communities, were discovered for the first time in the Lower Sakmarian deposits of Northern Verkhoyanie (Northeast Russia). The age of the find is confirmed by the presence of the zonal brachiopod species Jakutoproductus insignis Abramov et Grigorjeva. Previously, the oldest find of Inoceramus-like forms in the Northern Hemisphere was dated to the end of the Sakmarian Age. Such an early appearance of Inoceramus-like bivalves in the Permian sections of Northeast Asia is associated by us with their invasion from the Gondwanan basins with the beginning of the large Echian transgression.
