The economics of spatial inequality in Russia's regions: geographical factors and ways to smooth out the imbalances

Abstract

the article examines the problem of spatial inequality in the socio-economic development of Russian regions. Particular attention is paid to the role of geographical factors such as transport accessibility, border location, and natural resource potential in shaping interregional disparities. The study is based on official statistical data, regional strategies, and international databases, using methods of statistical and econometric analysis, GIS-based spatial visualization, and cluster analysis. The results show that spatial polarization is strengthening: major agglomerations concentrate investment and human capital, while peripheral territories face stagnation and depopulation. The research highlights institutional limitations that reduce the effectiveness of regional policy and emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to reducing disparities. Practical recommendations include the development of transport and logistics infrastructure, support for cross-border cooperation, stimulation of cluster initiatives, and strengthening of innovation potential.
