Abstract
The article examines the genesis of the theory of symbols in Russian Symbolism. The idea of symbol as a spell, charm words and poetry as a mystery appears at the end of XIX century in poetry of I. Konevskoj in process of the literary interaction, namely, under the influence of the Finnish national epic Kalevala and the theory of Novalis' magical idealism.
