Moscow today: trends in town-building planning

Abstract

Moscow has witnessed notable shifts in urban development domain in the last decade. Renovation program has got under way, basic approaches to territorial planning have undergone changes, a course has been set for polycentric development of the city. Director of Genplan Institute of Moscow in her interview to the Herald has given an account of the latest trends in town-building design. T. N. Guk revealed the Institute’s most notable projects and the cutting-edge digital based approaches employed in Moscow and beyond. A contest has been launched currently among architecture bureaus, which will open the way to starting a database of quality and ingenious architectural solutions of housefronts for houses built under the renovation program. The contest’s outcome will be instrumental to giving Moscow’s new housing developments a specific, unique design. The Institute’s specialists are sharing their Moscow’s own best practices in developing town-planning documentation for Russia’s other cities.
